Massa hit by spring in F1 quali

Looks pretty nasty but the F1 site says he escaped serious injury.

Came off the car ahead of him, cant remember who though. That reminded me of Senna's death.

No kidding. Now they are calling it a piece of tubular debris. Still don't know where that would come from.

Looks like a spring, figure it would have to be the suspension- spring or tube. Massa's face does not look good, that is terrible. Surprised the shield broke of but that looked like a pretty substantial piece of energy and at speed that means a lot of energy.

Must have momentarily stunned him the way he just drove straight through the next turn and into the barrier. Fortunately he was slowing down the whole way.

I'm expecting they will upgrade helmets. But at least it saved him from a really bad injury.

Wow!

Thoughts go out to "old Phil"!!

Quote:
Felipe Massa, struck by a component from Rubens Barrichello’s Brawn Mercedes in qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix, has undergone surgery this afternoon at the AEK hospital in Budapest.

Massa sustained head injuries from the flying debris including facial cuts but more significantly a fractured skull and concussion. He remains in a ‘serious but stable’ condition the hospital has confirmed via the AFP news agency.

The outcome of the procedure was 'positive' the Ferrari team has confirmed and the Brazilian is to remain under observation and in intensive care.

It was not one of the wheel springs. It was one (the rear) of the springs they have on the car centerline to take downloads from the wings when the car is running fast.

Wow again. Fractured skull requiring surgery. I wonder how long he will be out of racing (F1 is off for about a month after this race).

That is one of those incidents that was just a freak thing. No matter what the safety features are, what are the chances of something like that happening?

It is a good thing that what he hit after getting struck in the head was a very large tire wall.

Yah, well when the loose nut behind the wheel is stunned I don't think the car will turn too well.
