Hey Des, somebody else remembers OUR, little talks about automatic oilers. And I gotta tell ya, I still haven't found anything any better than the Honda Red Can, yet. ONE, adjustment still at 12K. BUT, I have to admit, I still always carry my mini can of WD-40 with me when I go on a trip, It's a GREAT fire starter for my campfires. And come on Des, tell the TRUTH, you did say you tried the Red Can, Right? SO, you know, I know, EVERYBODY knows that Honda Red can stays on the chain longer than my old favorite fire starter. Come on Des, you can at least admit that. And my thoughts about WD-40 haven't changed, just like my thoughts on automatic chain oilers haven't changed. Chains last as long as they do, I'm refering to the ones being. LUBRICATED? by WD-40, not, BECAUSE of WD-40 but, INSPITE of using WD-40. AND, I ALSO, know, and you know, and EVERYBODY knows you've not changed your mind on the subject either. So why do we do this? Hey it's raining out. Even though, I'll just bet you're suplimenting the olde fire starter with a shot of Honda Red can now and then. Come on Des you can tell me. I won't tell anybody, REALLY. But seriously Old Des is my buddy, even though we agree on NOTHING, well, nothing to do with taking care of a bike anyway. But he did introduce me to soft ties. But when Des was runing ON about how many millions of miles he's getting out of his chain and ONLY using WD-40, yawn, yawn. THEN, some fella mentioned the OLDE automatic chain oiler, Well, I couldn't help myself. Later

Wow. That's sooooooooo much better than my THREE adjustments in 18,000. And come on Des, tell the TRUTH, you did say you tried the Red Can, Right? SO, you know, I know, EVERYBODY knows that Honda Red can stays on the chain longer than my old favorite fire starter. Come on Des, you can at least admit that. I tried it. I found no evidence that it stays on any longer. Only reason I bought it 'cause it was for sale cheap and I was feeling vulnerable at the time. I've used the stuff about 5 times. Now it sits on the garage shelf. Lonely, and unused. though, I'll just bet you're suplimenting the olde fire starter with a shot of Honda Red can now and then. Of course SB. How else could it be I have gotten 18k so far on the chain? I MUST be secretly using the lube that YOU approve of. As to the chain lubing thing I bought. I was quite up front about why I got it back then. I love gadgets, and it was cheap. I don't recall ever indicating anything else than that. Anyway, let me know when you get 1.5x or 2x more mileage than I do out of my chain. |

I've got 17k on the chain and have only adjusted it 3 times while using WD-40. The main thing is to keep up on the maintenance. I try to maintain the chain every 500 miles or so, which works out to every third time I go for a ride. Actually, I have also used Tri-Flow, which seems to work pretty good.
Got the bike back today from it's belated 16k service and the shop guys said everything was looking good! ![]() Wolfman

RoadRashed -
They charged me a total of $149.06. Looks like it breaks down as follows: Labor - $120.00 Parts - $22.80 Environmental Charge for old oil - $2.00 Shop Supplies - $5.00 Tax - $1.71 Total = $151.51 - 10%discount on parts = above total. I'm assuming this was for 2 hours of work @$60.00/hr. For California, Bay Area price it doesn't seem too bad? I dropped the bike off the night before, and was able to pick it up mid-afternoon the following day. That's based more on my schedule than theirs, as I probably could have picked it up earlier. I don't know why it would take all day, unless they're really busy. Wolfman |

Des, Des, You have NO, sence of humor at all. But yes I will be sure to let you know if and when, I get Waaaaaaaaaay more miles out of the chain and sprocket set than you do, while actually using a chain lube the chain manufacturer recommended. Although, I have to admit, WD-40 was on the list. The NOT recomended list. And Des, COME ON buddy, I mean REALLY, can't you see the difference between the Red Can and WD? I gotta tell ya Des, this has me SERIOUSLY wondering about your powers of observation. Hey I tell you what, we'll exchange addresses, and I know I've got an old pair of readers around here somewhere. You send me the rest of that Red Can you've got out in your garage, (then we won't have to think that MAYBE, just MAYBE, he's using the old Red Can on his chain and TELLING everybody it's just plain old WD-40s superior lubricating properties thats making his chain last so long). And then I'll send you the glasses. Deal? Yep, it rained again today and I couldn't think of anybody I'd rather tease than my old buddy Desmo. Later

For what its worth...
I have tried chain wax..someone shoot me. Then I went to prolong..and it lubed freakishly well, but still held a bit of grit and didn't clean worth a darn. Des talked me into using WD-40 and if for nothing else, it cleans better than anything else I have used. (Except, that is, for the brake parts cleaner I used to strip 10k+ miles of chain wax.) Now days, I wipe and lube my chain at least every weekend, so all things conisdered, my chains remain clean as a bell and lubed. If you don't do much maintenance on your chain, maybe WD-40 isn't the best. But, for the cost... you cannot beat it. PLUS, there is something about the smell of WD-40 that just makes my heart go pitter patter.

Quite the contrary SB. Problem is I can't tell when you're joking or being serious. ![]() I mean REALLY, can't you see the difference between the Red Can and WD? Not really. I mean I didn't take the bike to a lab for research on the topic or anything. But I cleaned the chain, dried it, applied the Honda stuff liberally. Checked it after a few hundred miles and it didn't appear to have stayed on the chain any better than WD40 does. Yep, it rained again today and I couldn't think of anybody I'd rather tease than my old buddy Desmo. Later Rain? What's that? I'll be heading to Laguna in a couple hours on the FZ. It's perfect weather I might add. Oh, here's a photo for you from my ride last week - |

SB, you have no sense of humor! Hey that's a nice bike. Who's is it? You used to have the slower black one. Errr, no. My FZ has been blue since the first day I got it. OK, what's SB stand for? Shorthand for Slipbobber. |

Hey Des. Yea I believe this bike was blue since the first day you got it, but what about black one you had before this one? I swear when you posted a couple pics way back when, on the old board, of your automatic chain oilers hiccup, it was a black bike. Oh and seems like there was one of a group of bikes where a few of you guys took a fast trip across a desert or something. And seems like I even remember raggin on you about having the slower black one. But hey I guess it could just be CRS kickin in again. Oh, but who could forget about the pic showing us your chicken strips.
Who says old SB doesn't have a sense of humor. Gotta go, it's NOT raining today. Later

Testimonial - I have tried those other chain waxs and lubes - the ones that are NOT WD-40 but all I can get out of a chain with those is 1500 Miles. After that I have to change chains and replace the swingarm and rear end of the bike. Oh - the shock is shot too along with the sprockets. With WD-40 I don't have any of those problems!
