The 7d is awesome.... i've been tossing around the idea of picking up a second one for a backup.... origionally, I was thinking about a 30d/40d as a backup... but they don't compare....
Get some good, fast CF cards..... and the zeikos grip is $100 less than the canon grip...

Thanks Ed. Taking a closer look this morning, some turned out better (sharper) than I thought and some of the others seem to be a fudged focus point. Still sifting through them, but it's looking like my fault
![]() Anyone know what sort of DOF I get on the 50 1.8 if I'm shooting in the mid f2 range? How far do I need to stop down for a decent portrait DOF?

Here's a 100% crop. This was shot at f3.2 and the focus point was right between his eyes. The fingers are already starting to loose focus. Perhaps I need to stop down or switch back to more than a single center focus point.

Here's question that "crops" up in my mind
![]() If I switch back from a single center focus point to multiple focus points, but continue shooting in manual mode, how will that affect the shot? The way I understand focus points is that there is a single flat plane of focus that the camera can see. Do multiple focus points make that plane of focus more 3d or deeper? How does that affect DOF? I'm envisioning a situation where the focus points grab things in the foreground as well as the background to focus on.

Wife approval is 9/10ths of the law! Go for it Jred! Congrats.
Hotcam, looked like a fun shoot. what was the lighting like? Strain, AF with a fast lens can be tricky. I have always manually selected my focus point, this way i know what the camera is selecting for focus. If you shoot wide open, having your focus off just a tad can mean disaster. I used to always use center an recompose, but found that it sometimes wouldn't hit focus because i moved just a tad. |

Ryan, what do you mean by "manually selected my focus point"? As in you use MF or instead of centerpoint focusing and then recomposing, you compose and then choose the focus point that is closest?

Yeah I select the closest focus point to the subject I want to focus on, then the decompose is very close.

I tried a bit of MF, but he moves around too much to be able to take candid shots. He's a squirmy little bugger
Plus the low light made it really tough for me to tell if I was sharp or not. I suspect I need more practice!

..... the only other solution I see is to use a smaller aperture ( f/8, or so)

Is that how far I need to stop down for a reasonable DOF? I need to do a bit of practice with the flash to balance that out.
On the whole, I'm happy with the shots. After cropping to get rid of the boring factor, some are turning into good photos. I'm glad I went with the flash. I'd have never been able to get any useful shots without it.
