You don't necessarily need a long lens to capture kid action stuff.

70mm in IR.

You sure don't need one all the time... but if you're trying to shoot action on a court from the audience, or closeups of a performance on stage, or closeups of swimming action from three rows deep in the seats, they sure help a lot.

Sure, I'm just saying don't let that stop you.

I have found carrying around a large mortar (the 200mm) scares the other parents too much.

This is 105mm. Yeah, I had to be at the edge of the field.

i know the feeling. you kind of feel like a "showoff" of sorts, walking in with a big telephoto lens to sit and take pics of your kids.

Folks assume you know what you're doing if you have a big lens. They tend to get out of your way too, which is fine by me.

Yeah well I catch enough grief from people wondering why the big white dude is paying so much attention to the cute Asian kid.

That gets old. Lemme tell ya.

Actually I've read that people sometimes give you a hard time because:
A) They badger you with questions because they think you know a lot
B) They make rude comments thinking you are wealthy with no clue and like to show off your expensive equipment.

Speaking of...I was at a wedding recently and the "professional" photographer was taking pictures at the reception on a tripod with an non-L Canon lens. A know-it-all started asking him questions and they got on the subject of image stabilization. Long story short, after listening for a while, I had to tell the "professional" that he should have the IS turned off when using the tripod or it could cause blurriness or other artifacts. He was nearly done taking the shots and turned a little pale when I told him.

The manufacturers state that. I have found it depends on the lens. The latest of Nikon's anti vibration stuff on the big bazooka I have doesn't seem to care what you do. I can't see any difference.
