I had just never seen a lens that long before. I don't think I would ever buy an f/8+ lens anyway.

i can say that i'd pull of shots like this on a pretty regular basis.....

http://img235.imageshack.us/img235/7462/img4155i.jpg

(obviously the focus is on the child sliding down the slipnslide, and dof of a wide open aperture is causing the child in the BACKGROUND to appear "soft", but the fast moving little boy is pretty dang sharp, especially for an action shot)
Ya know it dawned on me as I read your post, if you compare the two entry level lines side by side, out of the box, jpeg vs jpeg the nikkor is noticeably sharper. I'll bet this is more a function of how the on board software processes the image to jpeg. I'm willing to bet that more sharpening/contrast is used in Nikon's processing. If that's the case then obviously the novice/recreational shooter is going to benefit from the 'ready to go' jpeg coming out of the nikon.
Just food for thought.

BTW dipps, that shot appears sharp to me as well.

you can see some "softness" around his head (cut me some slack, the little dude was bookin' ), but that would not be noticeable in a 4x6, 5x7, or even 8x10 print, so deemed negligible imo, especially since i rarely do more than 4x6.

Well my house just sold, all subjects removed and deposit cheque received. I will be rid of a mortgage by the end of August and no debt. Guess I can buy that camera now.

You are gonna have to give me a better argument than sharpness to make me understand why the DX000 line beats out the Rebel line in your mind... I'm not saying an arugment can't be made, I'm just saying that's not it!

That must be nice! And I love camera gear and all, but doesn't that merit more than just a camera? Like maybe a sportscar or a new bike!

IQ is el unmero uno in my book and carries most of the weight in my decision. But that's me and that is why photography is so subjective, some criteria are mean more to some than others.

Nope! I like my VW Rabbit just fine, thanks. And it is way too crazy to ride a bike around here. I lost the spark a couple of years ago and sold the FZ1, however I recently acquired a 25 year old Honda 250 Elite Scooter to do short jaunts to the beach or for errands in off peak traffic hours.

I think Poppy might even fit into the trunk with the lid open, so she can come too. Now that might make a cute picture! Pug in a Trunk!

Thank you, sir.
I've already grown fond of the new 17-40 lens. It's a keeper.

Wow, a Rabbit! Sweet! I had a Fox at one point. They haven't made a Rabbit for a while, have they? Anyway, if you have no mid life crisis stuff to buy like sportscars, get the camera... and yes to pics of the pug in the scooter trunk!

Actually, sharpness is a component of IQ (Image Quality) and in my subjective POV is a heavily weighted component of IQ. It's usually the first thing my eye notices about an image.

Other components include,
Noise
Dynamic range
Tonal quality
Contrast
Vignetting
yada, yada, yada...

thanks Hammer!

Jethro, I have the 2.5 litre so it's a pretty zippy car. Bought it in 2007 and still love it. Way more space in it than it looks too.

I will post a pic of the pug in the trunk as soon as I get one. Have to concentrate on packing for the next few weeks though. I think maybe a trip to the camera store is order tomorrow though. I have a camera or two I might attempt to sell on consignment there as well. That is if they'll take them because they are film cameras.

Oh... see, I don't think they sell a Rabbit here anymore. Do they?

What do you pack for traveling

I'm headed for a long weekend soon. Trying to figure out what I need to take. I want to travel as light as possible - just doing carry on.

Will likely be shooting outdoors only. Not sure what the opportunities will be - Napa.

TIA!
