Still working on this macro thing guys. What am I doing wrong / right?

I used a tripod for both shots. Stopped down to 16 on the pink / 22 on the yellow to get a bit more DOF. Comments, criticisms, witty sayings?

JS - much better, little or no motion blur. What were you focusing on in each? I like to use live view when doing this type of shot. BTW the pink one may be slightly overexposed. My .02...

Jeremy.......
Very very seldom that you can take a good flower pic in full sun.
The sun blows out the detail in the shot and nothing generally looks right.
Next time take the shot early morning or late afternoon light and you will see a huge difference.

Birght!! Sharpness "usually rolls off quite a bit when you stop down that far (just step away from the subject to get deeper DOF). I don't like to go past f/14 (unless I am doing sunburst shots), do some static test shots to see for yourself were the IQ roles off. Can't give any advise on macro shooting. i went out also today for some flower shots, have to post them up later tonight.

Looks like a good start though.

Stopped down to f 16

But choseks correct, right about now would be a excellent time to get out there (maybe even use your flash for fill). Don't freak out, your off to a awesome start! Plus, did you have fun going out and taking them??? I am betting yes, so who cares what people think : )

Good point Ryan! I did enjoy it. As long as they're better than my first ones, I'm happy.

Improvement is a long and hard road

With JStrains permission I played with his pics, no cropping. Basic images were fine.

for starters... all of the sudden, all of my lenses are much faster to focus...
put in AI Servo, the 7d can keep up with the cat when she goes tearing around the house.
Low Light / High ISO performance = AMAZING. 1600ISO is perfectly usable...
Burst mode: holy crap. ... burst mode... just... wow... with a 60MB/s CF card, this thing just keeps on shooting... I hit 22 shots in a single burst, then it slows down a bit and fires of bursts of 2-3 for a while... with about .5 sec in between.

then, there's the feel... the magnesium body... slightly larger build than the T1i... it feels like a brick with a lens on it... but, that's a good thing... when I got my T1i, the S5is felt like a toy... now with the 7d, the T1i feels like a toy.... but, the 24-105 is perfectly sized for it... it doesn't look like a 50 gallon barrel mounted to a deck of cards...

The shoulder window makes the rear LCD pretty much obsolete except for "chimping" the shots after they're taken.... speaking of the LCD... you can review your shots in bright daylight without having to jam the camera under your shirt...

everything about the 7d just screams high quality...

the sound of the shutter... I wish I could record what it accurately sounds like... the sound is much quieter than what I'm used to, and it's a precise "snick-a, snick-a" ...

All of the buttons are a bit daunting at first, but it doesn't take long to make you feel right at home with the controls.. they're rather intuitive...

The main thing I'm trying to figure out is what makes the HUGE difference between what the images look like on the camera, compared to what the images look like on the computer... shooting in RAW, on the LCD, the pictures look outstanding... but then when imported into LightRoom, they're a grey tint to them, and some of the colors are overdone... when pixel-peeping, the colors look like the saturation is cranked wayyy too high and the colors get washed out because of that... so... I need to figure out what's going on there... I'm thinking that it shouldn't matter what "picture style" I'm shooting in, since I'm shooting in RAW... so I'm sure that it's something to do with my settings in Lightroom.... I have the camera set to Adobe RGB as well as Lightroom set to Adobe RGB... maybe I need to switch them both to sRGB ... I dunno... I need more time to play with it, but tomorrow, I have 3 finals... so.. play time will have to wait a little bit...

Thanks for the PP JR! And to everyone else for the advice. I'm excited to play with this lens some more.

Aaron, I've spend enough money on this damn hobby. Stop encouraging me to buy more stuff!

when the selection menu is open hit the Enter key (not a mouse click) the enter key will lock your profile for any tool. So say you like to open your magic brush with the exposure set to -4, select -4 and hit enter (not close) and the next time you open the tool it will default to -4.

Congrats on the 7D!! Jealous
