I use a tripod quite a bit. But not for the situations in the photos you posted above. Hiking with the wife or my buddies I would not carry a tripod (usually) and I would never use one taking photos of the dog.

JR nice flower shots.
It was over cast so I used in the am wide open, performed awesome, once the sun came over I switched over to the 70-200. Going to try some macro stuff this week (fingers crossed).

yeah... I've been playing around with it this morning... and to get anything bigger than a pin head in focus, you have to go about f/8 or higher...

Give me a minute, and I'll work up a quick post comparing different f/stops on the 60mm box...

"Phil" was the focal point on all of these shots...

f/32 - It's a bit soft

f/18 - Sharper, pretty broad DOF

f/11 - Sharper yet, DOF starting to get thin

f/8 - Razor Sharp. DOF about 2"

f/5 - Razor Sharp - Thinner DOF

f/2.8 - Razor Sharp - DOF = about 1/2"

f/2.8 at MFD - DOF = 1/4" or less... but Wicked Sharp

Bill.... I use PhotoMatix ... or I fake it with Lightroom.... or fake it in PhotoShop with Topaz Adjust. .... The Topaz Adjust fakes are probably my favorites.... but I like that "overdone" HDR look.

VA - Take that lens out for an afternoon walk-a-bout, and you'll discover more of the true beauty of the 60 mm. Don't forget to try it on your kitty !

It doesn't bounce when it turns on, it's silent and way more effective than the older versions. You must be loving that lens!
Thanks jethro. I have the 28-135 and only seemed to give me 1 or 2 stops at best. The IS on this lens is def louder, but not intrusive. I get about 4 stops at infinity focus on this lens, absolutly fun lens to play with. Oh and these shots are crops!!! Not quite 100 percent, but pretty close. Hands down the sharpest lens I own.

A guy named PetKal on FM, who probably has 100K worth of lenses, raves all the time about how good the 60mm macro is. I can see why.

hammer I'm planning on taking it for some outside usage... but I'm also thinking that this will become a good lens for the indoor food stuff... getting used to that DOF is going to take me a little while though...

....... of course the razor thin DOF will be most prevalent at extremely close distances. I've also found it to be a great head & shoulders portrait lens. It's the multi-tool of the lens lineup !!!

After the sickness of 'Tax Week' (both mental & physical - I had a terrible cold), I think I need to treat myself to a new lens. I'm eyeing that 15-85 IS that brother Jethro raves about. Does anyone else (in our thread) own it ?

I saw a short blurb about that in my newest issue of Popular Photography, 'DD. I'm going to keep my eye on that lens, and see what the 'review' sites say, once it's released.
