Clapton's YMMV.

Do you think Dylan's version of Watchtower is better than Hendrix's?

Hm. Never heard that version. FWIW, I was confining my comments to songs released by the record companies specifically to get on the charts and make them cash, not obscure concert versions. I kind of expect covers of other peoples' material during live shows.

And, no, I don't think Clapton's version is anywhere near as good as Dylan's.

They're so different that they're practically not even related. Which I guess is better than doing a note for note copy.

Without digressing too much into music analysis (which I often tend to do), Dylan songs are strange to cover simply by virtue of the fact that his singing style rarely yields any trace of a discernible melody, so whichever artist chooses one of his songs is pretty much forced to make one up.

I've never really been a fan of Jimi's music, although I can admire his artistic sensibilities and originality. I'd have to call his and Dylan's versions a draw in my book. I thought Dylan was a brilliant poet, but overrated musically.

over.

If you're asking me, I'll opine.

Being a purist, I'll have to go with Jimi's original. IMO, it's his crowning achievement as an artist, spellbinding in it imagery and savage guitar shredding.

While SRV is among only a handful of artist that could do a classic like that justice, his version is so faithful as to really not add anything to it.

IMHO, of course.

Here's one of the very few re-makes I found really interesting. Of all things, Dolly Parton's most famous song, which I always thought was kind of hokey. Mindy Smith's version is subtle and haunting, with beautiful guitar work from Sonny Landreth.

Nice nod to Dolly in the beginning of the video.

Hmmm, I like the guitar work in that remake, but the video kind of kills it because the singer is pretty hot, better looking than Jolene, in my opinion. Dolly's version may have been hokey, but she knew how to sing it to rip your heart out. You could believe she's fighting to keep her man.

Not that she really should want to keep him.

I backslid on my promise to end the hijack, so I'll try to make it right.

As long as we're talking music, here's what ticks me off... at times.

Undecipherable lyrics. Steely Dan is probably the main offender of this practice, but I just heard an America song that was big in the 70's. I used to laugh to myself when I heard friends singing along with it, like they knew what they were singing about.

"But Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man
That he didn't, didn't already have
And cause never was the reason for the evening
Or the tropic of Sir Galahad."

Huh?

Yesterday on facebook I finally got the lyrics right to "did you exchange a walk on part in the war, for a lead roll in a cage" which I thought was "did you exchange a walk on part of the wall, where the leaves roll in a cage."

Hey, what can I say, I make shit up all the time.

I remember hearing an interview with Seal, whose lyrics don't make half sense anyway, and he said something along the lines of, he didn't care what people thought they were or if they sang them wrong, if they worked for them and meant something, it was fine by him.

Different than the original, but interesting:

The single best version of this widely covered song, IMHO:

Requesting PTO for next December around the Christmas holidays because you've let other people have at them the last three years, then having one of those other people whine because they missed out.
