yeah she's sumthin' special.
you know the choir director at church said "holee crap" when she opened her mouth. had a girl like that in 9th grade don't remember her name, but sittin' on the stage, hunched over, she opened up and almost blew out the p.a. system.music teacher stood there, her mouth was moving but no sound came out. girl looked a lot like the biscuit lady.

I always loved the blues more than jazz. My dad was a bassist, primarily, and a guitar player. For a while he toured with a guy named Gary "B.B." Coleman and later was in a band in OKC called Mary Ann and the Blue Dogs.
http://www.bluescritic.com/GaryBBColeman.htm http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/4461/mabd_cd1.htm I remember being very young and asking him to play Pipeline again and again. I love that bass line. He owned a Gibson Les Paul Custom which, for lack of a better title, we called a moonburst. White/gray in the middle fading out to black. My dead-ex bought it from him, which was kind of how we hooked up. We used to joke he bought a guitar for $500 and he got a groupie for free. One of the most beautiful guitars I've ever seen. We pawned it between college and real world and forgot about it until it was too late. (Daddy always said the first things to go when you need money are guitars, guns and motorcycles.) That always drove me nuts, thinking about losing it. It was one of the few connections I still had with my own dad. Second only in the "nuts" to the Martin I bought the ex once for his birthday. Not to be found among his personal effects. The only thing he owned of value and that I wanted his kids to have. I think his "friends" stole it. Nice friends he had. Anyway, someone write me a song: Guns, Guitars and Motorcycles, always the first thing to go...baby needs a new pair of shoes.

I promise, this is it. No more.
Meanwhile, Joey DeFrancesco, Frank Vignola, and Jo Ascione turn pure corn into something excellent. Please stay for at least the guitar (vignola) solo, after first Hammond solo. |

Here is my favorite guitarist Pat Metheny. In the first track he plays a really freaky guitar with strings running all over the thing. Note that he's playing the bassnotes with the left hand using hammer ons and all the other strings with his right. Only the bass strings have a fretboard, all the others are played open. Then it's followed by a really great track called "Have You Heard"

.........seriously tripp'n..........
tuned into the Blues above, LOVED dude on the guitar, felt the gospel coming through,,,, brought me back to the day when life was soooo much simpler .... and YouTube cut me off at ten minutes. So I thought I'd get a little fix-o-Metheny (got burned out on the cat after sooooo many hours of kick'n it with Pat). Damn, like a time machine, back in the space I was when living in Mid-town Sac', the Ducati, a full dress Yamaha 750, my little Moto Guzzi.... and a new girl friend every year. I'm listening to Pat still playing while I type this, and I shoulda left the work site by now. Dammit, I was twenty five years younger in those days, complained that I was overweight at 135 pounds, and still a little Liberal. Now older, bitter, cynical, but still in love with good music............. Well, guess I better sign off and go home. Good way to end the work day.

Hey Drewman, Pat Metheny and Charlie Haden released a duo CD back oh about ten years ago called Beneath the Missouri Sky that is very good, have you heard it? It`s all ballad tempo pieces and i have never been able to listen to the complete CD without falling asleep, in fact my wife has been using it for a sleeping pill for years. Still, it is great music.
This is the only piece from it I can find on youtube, no video. |

Ray Brown on soloing the bass. Of interest probably only to bass players and hard-core jazz fans.
