I`ll chase that litttle digression with some actual jazz. Art Pepper, pictured with the clarinet in his head ,is really playing alto. Tragic character.

I was just thinking the same thing. Always loved Motown and Stax. And any sax solo is hard to beat.

I don`t know whether to thank y`all or apologize for coming off like such a know-it-all. Anyways, some things are interesting to me that maybe to most folks aren`t . I read books and stuff.

Motown is relevant since Gordy hired mostly jazz musicians to work in his studio.

And I have good reason to mention Mike Terry. In the late 80s there was a book, titled "Standing in the Shadows of Motown", written about the genius motown bass player James Jamerson. Then a few years ago a movie was made based loosely on the book, and expanded to include many of the other motown studio players, who were known at the studio as the funk brothers. The movie was pretty great, but omitted any mention of Mike Terry, whose bari work should be considered essential to any discussion not only of motown but soul music in general, IMO.

So here: http://www.sixtiesdetroit.com/60s-de...e%20terry1.htm

I can relate. And you? A know-it-all? That's your one redeeming trait.

LT, have you ever heard of a guitar player named Chris Duarte? Mrs. fizzyrider read about him in a local rag, about him playing Jacksonville this weekend. We decided to check him out last night at Mojo's, which is supposed to be a blues club, but this dude is anything but.

In short, I believe this guy is probably the most amazing, versatile and gifted guitar players I personally have ever seen. This is a fairly small place he was playing in, and we got there early and were privileged to watch him from about 20 ft away. For $15, I can't think of a better dollar for value show in my experience.

Although he plays a few straight ahead blues tunes, he seemed most at ease and inspired ripping into his signature funk/jazz/fusion tunes. The only other guitar player I've seen work the neck like this guy (or close to it) was Pat Travers.

He played for two hours straight, and I swear my mouth didn't close once. Just freakin' amazing.

Anyway, I haven't figured out how to embed YouTube videos yet, so I'll post a link. This is pretty much how we saw him last night at Mojo's. The vocals are strangely subdued on this track, but frankly he ain't much of a singer. The guitar work comes through pretty clean, though, but this is only the tip of the iceberg of what he can do.

One amazing show. I feel it's my responsibility to spread the word. I shook his hand afterwards and he was very gracious. Go see this guy in performance!

Sorry if this doesn't technically qualify as jazz, but you peeps seem to appreciate good musicianship. I had to share.

That is all.

This one is better, methinks. Kind of Jimi Hendrix/Robin Trower-ish.

Glad y`all enjoyed the show, Chris Duarte is an awesome player.

The Mojo Kitchen on Jax beach...I looked it up and checked their calendar, and you`re in luck !! (if you trust me). Get tickets for next friday`s show, this one will expand your musical horizons a bit.

Don`t think, just do it.

To say the least. Guitar Player magazine rated him as "4th best guitar player of all time". Of course, those lists are fairly meaningless, but to receive such high praise, you know the dude has the chops.

It was just a happy accident that we went to see him. Just kind of a lark, really. I guess all the planets were aligned right or sump'm. A show I'll always remember.

I'm trusting you about next week's act, even without seeing who it is. We will plan to attend.
