well, the kids are now "gold belts" in karate class, and the next "semester" has begun. quite a few new rules in place for this semester. more focus to be placed on "discipline" (basically more "respect", including the instructor being referred to as "sensei" now instead of "mister"..... also emphasis on using "sir" or "ma'am" when responding to questions ). there's also a new "program" or two being utilized...... one being the "AOK" (acts of kindness) program. the AOK program is basically a program where the student is required to perform a certain number of "acts of kindness" over the span of a month. "acts of kindness" can include all sorts of things, including "sharing with someone", "getting a blanket for mom or dad if they're cold", "getting a glass of water for someone without being asked (perhaps after a workout), etc. the parent is then required to log these on a sheet and turn it in at the end of the month. if the requirements are met, the child is awarded a badge for their uniform.

there's also a "dragon belt" program for "the quick path to a black belt" which requires a good deal of "outside of class activities" each month. this particular month requires the student to perform 300 push-ups over the course of the month. that's about 10-15 a day. not sure if my 4yo is up to that particular task, but we'll try and see. there's other requirements for the dragon belt class, including maintaining a B or better average in school, but i can't recall the other requirements at the moment.

Thanks for the chuckle, Cullen. Builds character indeed.

My daughter came into the bathroom one day and while I was shaving. She wanted to try it, so I gave her some shaving cream and a plastic spoon, and she had a blast.

My wife took off to see her Grandmother yesterday so I'm home alone with the kids and after I'm finished eating I get up to load the dishwasher with my eldest helping, while the 6yo is still finishing dinner.

As I'm putting a plate is the dishwasher I proceed to stab myself on a knife in the silverware basket... "SHIT" says me (we don't ever swear, at least around the kids) and there is dead silence for about thirty seconds... Then my 6 yo says "I can spell that".

I must have laughed for about 15 minutes.....

That's hilarious. Yeah, having kids definitely changes your vocabulary, doesn't it?

reminds me of a story from way back.... before my 4yo was around, and back when my 6yo was still in a highchair. wifey (who's definitely not one to use swear words often ) was putting dishes away one day and dropped a plate, which then proceeded to break and scatter all over the kitchen floor. in anger, my wife uttered "shit" under her breath (just loud enough that i was able to hear it from where i was sitting in the living room).... then silence for about 6 or 7 seconds....... then "sit" was uttered by our approx 1.5 yo daughter as she sat watching the events unfold in her highchair.

my wife had to come into the living room quickly so we could both quietly laugh about it (it WAS funny ), then went back into the kitchen and tried to explain to our daughter that that was a naughty word and mommy shouldn't have said it.

tonight was the first night of sparring at karate. another $40 bucks sunk into pads for hands and feet.

it was great. my 4yo was a little shy about (but then again, she's easily the smallest in the class.... and youngest by a good 2 years ), but by 6yo has the eye of the tiger. she's got moxy...... the look of "i can do anything..... i can whoop anyone in here" as she stands ready to get busy. and once it's time to go, she goes right after the kid. really quick reflexes too...... blocks a lot of punches with ease, and counters right back with her other hand. she had the boy that she was sparring with backing away the whole time. but we have to get her to chill a little with the "strength"..... it's supposed to be a bit more relaxed so that nobody gets hurt, but it's obvious she has the same highly competitive nature as i do.

will be fun to have the two of them practice a little over the weekend..... help my 4yo get a little more confidence, and work on both of their techniques ('specially some jumping snap kicks or something ).

a pretty crummy pic, but the only one i could get...... sisters bowing towards one another after a bit o' sparring. wish i could have gotten a pic of my older daughters face as she was prepping to spar with some of the other kids..... VIDEO would've been even better..... just the way she settled into her ready stance..... so calm and relaxed, smooth and confident..... pretty cool. a proud daddy (and mommy) moment to the max, to be sure.

Nice looking family, dipps. A bit on the short side though. What I like about your kids, besides being cute, is they look like KIDS. With all the attitude they have when parents let them be themselves.

Here is Ben today enjoying one of the many cheap Chinese R/C flying things I've tried lately.

oh, trust me, they've got attitude. 'specially that little one.

as for being on the short side, they were both born premature (induced due to complications)........ the younger weighing in at a whopping 4 lbs 7 oz at birth, and nearly fitting in my hand. it's been a fun time just trying to get them up to the 50th percentile as far as height and weight goes.

your boy sure looks like he's got the hang of that helicopter. maybe he could give desmo some lessons.

A very proud Daddy moment this month. My oldest daughter Autumn got the first student of the month in her class! "for always willing to share and help in class 1A with the her teacher and her fellow classmates."

Congratulations Autumn - you rock!

Skypilot - thank you for helping us enjoy our children and keeping us safe!!!

wow. my 6yo's math grades went up quite a bit since she started using those sites linked above...... one night she did 90 + or - problems, and only got 4 wrong total (and no, i didn't make her do 90, i was giving them to her in sets of 30 at a time..... she just wanted to make it threw a set without having any wrong once, hence the reason she kept trying ). now she's getting all A's on her math homework.

anybody know of any fun boardgames to play with younger kids? my 6yo likes playing sorry quite a bit as of late. she's pretty good at it, too (strategy-wise), but i spanked her good last night. my 4yo likes to play "pirahna panic", but there's not a whole lot of strategy involved with that game.

that's pretty cool, autumn.

and a neat idea for an award to have in the classroom.

my daughters get similar awards, but not at school..... it's thru their karate class. they get various patches and stars and stuff to have ironed onto their uniforms for various things (like the "AOK - acts of kindness" program). neat ideas.

Dipps,

A good strategy game that I play with my 7 year old is Battleship. We also like to play the card game Uno. Another good game to play with a bunch of kids is Bingo. Just pick up a bunch of cheap prizes, and they have a blast.
