Smile fun things to do with your kids

what kind of things do you do with your kids for fun? i'm always on the lookout for new ideas, and..... being an engineer whose always got a lot on his mind.... i actually keep a list (spreadsheet) so i don't forget (and it also comes in handy for quick reference).

here's some of the things i have on it (keep in mind, my kids are 3 and 5 years of age):
- tickle/wrestling match
- play hide and go seek
- drawing and coloring together on the kitchen table (sometimes i'll grab and object and have the 3 of us sit down and try to draw that object, and compare our drawings afterwards)
- playing basketball in the rec room (with the fisher price "grow to pro" basketball hoop)
- building forts (usually with the bunkbed, but sometimes with the kitchen chairs)
- read books (mostly seuss classics, but also some electronic offerings from the fisher price "powertouch" book)
- playing with Kasey the Kinderbot (educational robot toy)
- card games (go fish as well as a few others)
- play with "Leapster" (electronic educational toy)
- play kids educational games on the computer (including disney games, dora the explorer, barbie, finding nemo, jumpstart, etc)
- google image searching (just sit on the computer and ask them to name something they want to "look up"..... like sharks, dinosaurs, puppies, horses, etc..... then dig up material (images, websites, etc) on that subject (an electronic encyclopedia program like microsoft encarta also comes in handy)
- walks or bike rides to the park to play on the playground equipment or search for frogs, snakes, throw rocks in the river
- go bug and butterfly hunting (they each have their own little "bug hunter" kit for this)
- blow bubbles
- play "chase"
- play ball tag
- play on the swingset in the back yard or cruise around in the power wheels jeep
- build a "little people" city
- evening walks around the neighborhood with the family
- swing in a hammock together on a lazy afternoon
- go fishing
- go rafting
- take a trip in the truck to a nearby (within 20 miles) park with a "mack daddy" playground and have a little picnic/playtime outing
- play baseball in the backyard while taking turns batting, pitching, and fielding
- play outside in the rain (no thunder or lightning )
- touchy feely box (put "unknown" items in a box with a hole in it so they can reach in and try to figure out what it is
- finger painting
- playing with playdoh
- play board games (checkers, chutes and ladders, candyland, hungry hungry hippos)
- go for a bike ride (with the kids in the bike trailer)
- nature walks (plenty of nature trails in our area to walk on)
- go to the beach on a hot day

that's a pretty good list (and i know i'm forgetting some things), but i'm always open for ideas. what kind of fun things do you do with your kids?

well, nap time was when daddy usually did something fun with mommy, but our kids don't take naps any more.

I only got neices and nephews. When one was eight, we took a hacksaw and cut open a golf ball to see what was inside. He thought that was the greatest thing in the world. What a mess!

-Making paper airplanes
-Playing with Star Wars toys (an excuse for me to play with them hehe)
-Build a fort - whether out of blanket in the living room or outside
-Build a dam in the creek
-Catch whatever's in the creek
-Rock collecting
-Swinging them around in circles or anything that otherwise makes you work and sweat while they laugh and have fun
-Making volcanoes out of mud
-Anything that makes a mess
-Doing magic tricks (I can amazingly remove my finger)

swinging in circles, yeah. we've got a "bug's life" bean bag that they like to lay on, and they i grab on to both sides (with one of them wrapped up in it kind of like a taco) and then i swing them around at "light speed" until they yell "stop!"

and it's not always just in circles.... sometimes it's up and over and around and all over the place. they come away from the ride dizzier than all get go, but always come running back for more in short order (much to the dismay of dad's poor back after about 4 or 5 rounds of this ).

as for playing in the creek..... i remember when i was a kid and used to go "fishing" for crawdads...... i used to get real skittish with my bare feet in there, but had a hoot trying to flush them out from under their rocks and then get them to scoot backwards into a little net that i had waiting for them (although oftentimes somehow they already knew the net was back there ).

This time of year, it usually involves water. Well, when we aren't riding trains.

Old photo, but we still use it a lot.

you ever go for a ride on one of those things? i tried it once last summer when we had ours set up. i went running full speed at it (which is pretty quick) and "launched".

not a good idea.

i didn't stop sliding until i was about 20 feet past the end.

grass burn. ouch.

i like going to the lake (beach) better...... it's fun tossing the kids up in the air in the water, or sneaking up on them while submerged beneath the surface.

played some hide and seek with the kids tonight (sucks being 3 times bigger than my kids.... finding a good hiding spot is tough .... not to mention the 3 year old always follows me when it's the 5 year olds turn to count, and she always gives away our position). then some tickle wrestling..... put 'em in a leglock and tickle 'em under the armpits as they beg for mercy.

was a fun night.

Nice list! Covered many of ours and more!

Here's some others we do-

Wagon ride around the neighborhood (evening)
Swim in the pool (Florida perk )
Family movie night (on the home theater w/surround!)
Trip to the beach / pier (another FL perk)
Design and build monstrous Thomas the tank engine track layout (Searching for Super Sodor!)
Watercolor painting out on the pool deck
Watch them on the trampoline
Swing them on the playset, or play with them on its enclosed fort.
Let them help daddy mess up the garage, working on the FZ1 and Magna.

There might be more but I'm going to go back over your list again now to steal some ideas!

oh, yeah.... family movie night is a given. we've got a nice home theater system, and tons of movie (my favorite kid's movies being tarzan, finding nemo, ice age, sinbad, treasure planet ). we camp out on the living room floor with pillows and blankets and popcorn.

and TONIGHT i think our "fun time together" will be helping daddy CLEAN (not mess) the garage. although that usually consists of them riding around the driveway and yard on their bikes and power wheels jeep.

here's one of our favorite spots to go for a nature walk..... a quarry with really nice, clear water that you can walk all the way around (and occasionally see deer on the way). it's real close to lake michigan, but isn't connected (hence the reason it's clean).

and as for wagon trips around the neighborhood in the evening...... here's a pic from one of our trips

gotta love quiet neighborhoods with no cars or traffic to worry about.
