Could have been worse! I've seen Merkur XR4ti's being advertised as Tracers in an attempt to pass them off as a real car.
Put a test light on the neg. coil term, crank engine, does it flash? If so check for spark at the coil wire going into dist. If not, is the ignition module still on the Dist. in 94? If so remove ignition module and check the two none ground wires going to the pick up coil for resistance. Are they between 600-1500ohms? If you are sure that you have checked the correct wires and have no reading close to this, remove the dist and replace the pickup coil, module replacement is optional. If the module is not on the dist. that year but already on a remote mount heatsink, I will have to research it for you and get back with the wires to check. If your ignition coil neg didn't flash and your pickup coil read good than chance are it's the module, unless it's a wiring eaten by wildlife issue. The most certain way to identify a bad module is with a module by pass. A module bypass is another module and another module connector wired together to use the PIP and Spout that pass through a defective module and process the signal with the other module. Most any mechanic that had to diagnose Ford TFI systems made one up at some point. I've been riding around with one behind the seat of my truck for 15 years. However a module by pass would not work on most Escorts. A peek into the connector end of the module revealed only three prongs instead of six. Tempo/Topaz I don't remember. However if you truely believe the car ran when it was parked, it's most likely critter damage! Don't bother replacing the fuel filter yet! That's all I got for now! I wish I knew those cars better.
