GIVI topcase

I am looking at buying a topcase in the next couple weeks for my 02 and foungd one at a BMW dealer for $175. I looked on the givi site and it looks like the carring capacity is only 6lbs. I will primarily be using this for going to college and carring the books that won't fit in my pack. books will easily go over 6lbs...any other suggestions? Here is toe one I was looking at... http://www.giviusa.com/cases-top-cas...ock-/E370-TECH

You can safely carry a larger load than that if it isn't going to slam around.

I've loaded my givi side bags for a week long beech trip (easily 25lbs in each bag) and over 1,000 miles round trip with no problem. They were packed so tight that I had to leave some toiletries behind to fit the T-shirt I bought in one for the ride home

Do you already have the Givi rack? Does it come with it? What's your location? We might need to chat.

That's a monolock case, primarily designed for light loads on scooters. Most of us use monokey cases that can handle a bit more weight.

It's bigger than you think. Mine has carried a 24 pack cube of Mountain Dew to work as well as my laptop backpack on a regular basis.

Also monolock doesn't mean it's for scooters. There's some very large monolock cases. The MonoKey cases are designed to be keyed to a set of side cases as well...hence the "One Key" for all cases design.

"Primarily for scooters". Even Givi says they were first designed for them. The monolocks and all rated at 3kg (6.6lbs) regardless of size. Sure, they can be used on motorcycles too.

The monokey cases are rated at 10kg (22lbs) which is the point Fireballsocal was trying to make.

The B33 monokey would be very similar to the original case the OP listed and handle more weight. Or the E36.

B33 Monokey

E36-E45

The monolock cases can come in pretty large sizes as that 37 liter model JH4016 is looking at is one size below me E45 case. It's still a light duty case in Givis opinion. I've no doubt though you've fit more weight in there. I load my E45 down pretty well on trips with no failure to report. Taken from Givis website:

Quote:
Monokey is the patented locking system that GIVI uses. One key can be used to lock/unlock the case and remove it from the mounts with the added option of matching all GIVI cases on your bike to the same key. It is also the name used for GIVI’s premiere series of cases.

The MonoKey series are actually the top of the line series with a more substantial mount, more features, and better quality construction. MonoKey mounts are sold separately.

The MonoLock cases are generally smaller and lighter top case with a smaller mount and lock up.You should consider MonoLock cases for “light duty” applications. MonoLock cases are sold with a universal mount.

Monolock cases are single skinned and of lightweight construction so they are for perfect use on scooters and small mororcycle but they are not suitable for high speed use.
Each Monolock case comes complete with a Monolock Plate and a selection of generic fittings, so the case may be fitted to any tubular type rear carrier that may already be on a bike.

Monokey and Monolock cases attach differently to their top plates. Monokey cases are interchangeable and can be used as top or side cases. Monolock cases are designed as top cases only, they cannot be used as side cases. Monolock cases come with their own universal mounting hardware/plate which is not interchangeable with the Monokey series mounts. Monolock cases are intended to be scooter cases but can be fitted to a MonoKey mount with the purchase of a special adapter.

Just because I'm being nitpicky...

It's a motorcycle case. Originally designed for scooters but not primarily designed for scooters.

Still, I'd like to see that B47 BLADE on a vespa!

Depending on what you want to haul, that E370 will do a good job. Dunno if I'd haul gold from a bank heist, but I've stuffed mine to capacity many times.

Also, the strap system on the lid that keeps it from swinging open too far really sucks balls on the E370. It's basically a screw that goes into a very thin piece of plastic. It is pretty much held in by about a single thread on the screw, and as such, is prone to ripping out. I had to do a repair on mine using a threaded insert type screw and a matching screw on the other side through the strap. Screws painted black and it's hardly noticible but a thousand times more durable than the crap they put on there from the Givi factory. Don't know what other cases use that but it sucks.

I will gladly look at a different case, I went for this one mainly for the price. Are the monokey cases close to the $175 I'm looking at? @ gixxerjasen...I have nothing yet. I'm from fresno, Ca, but flying to new York tonight for about 2 weeks, then back to san Francisco for a couple days

My better half is missing her laundry basket, can't seem to remember where it went. Holds all kinds of goodies, right now my lunch cooler/pocketbook. Comes with it's own cover/trashbag, and convenient front pocket for cover/ear plugs/pavement saver thingy, etc. Special blue 55 gallon drum bungee for anything you find along the way. I had a Monolock on my FJR for a long time, no issues and other than the latching system being different (which I actually liked better than the Monokey), I couldn't tell it was made in any way lighter than the Monokey I got with another bike.

I ended up switching the Monokey onto my FJR becasue I got a good deal on the steel aftermarket mount, the Monolock is still in service on a KLR somewhere. I put over 20K on that case on my FJR just bolted to the stock rack. Then it's probably done another 20K on my buddy's KLR.

Monoloks are cheaper, and it comes with a base. If you have a factory luggage rack or want to bolt something directly to your passenger seat they work great.

I bought the Givi top case arms(very well made) and used a piece of plywood (as an adapter plate between the arms and case mounting plate)to mount the Bestem case.
I'm cheap and used what I already had.
If I wanted to make it perfect I would get a small piece of aluminum and make a plate.
No real tools needed just a drill and jig saw or the place where you buy the aluminum might cut it for you.
The 929 comes with a mounting plate and hardware.
The case then comes off and on with a push of the button.
My wife has the 2012 model which is a little smaller and loves it.....Alan
