Hi guys, Phoenix is really trying his hardest to look out for you. We are not just 2 normal dudes with bikes. We lived, breathed, ate and slept motorcycles for a decade. I was a tech at a Honda sports and recreation dealer in Ontario for 5 years during which time I worked on a lot of motorcycles. As the dealers "sport bike guy" I almost exclusively worked on the cbr's.

You can do whatever you want with your break in, and you can follow whatever procedures you want no one in the world can change it if you've got something set in your mind. The publised oil spec for your bike is as thin as 10W30. That is for no reason other than fleet economy and emissions. I would NEVER EVER run a 10w30 in my cbr1000rr. I had an 08 (awesome bike btw)

Okay break in. The engine IS run at the factory. Every CBR engine IS run at the factory. And it is not just idled and shut down, they bring the rpms up under load. Here is what I did with my last 2 CBR's and it worked perfect for me. 3 full heat cycles, blipping the throttle, no riding. From cold to full operating temperature fans cycling. Back to full cold. Then drain that oil out and change it plus filter.

Next oil change gets done at 500 kms. Next oil change at 1000 kms, then every 4000 kms or so. Depending on your riding style etc.

You can take your owners manuals recommendations and do everything more frequently there is NO harm in that.

Myths: Factory oil is some kind of special break in oil. You will cause harm if you change your oil earlier than what they recommend.

Not a Myth: You will cause some internal wear if you run your bike with oil in it that has excessive amounts of metal in suspension. There is nothing at all good about it !

And thats about as much as I care to type on that subject. Enjoy your new bike !! The 12 CBR will be AWESOME, my 08 was soooo fast.

Dealer and mechanic said to keep revs below about 8000 for a while, but don't baby it either. The FZ starts getting fun around 7000, so I expect 8000 on the CBR should be a blast. Also need to get used to a new bike on new tires.

12Km home in suburban traffic will be gentle and I can take her into the hills from there...

I wonder why they don't do the run-in at the factory?

Me sitting on her in the showroom today

Nice bike mate, enjoy.

Run your bike in whatever way YOU want .
It's your bike and if you want to follow the book then by all means do it.
You're not racing in WSBK's with an unlimited supply of engines, parts etc.
The bike will be plenty fast for you no matter how you decide to run it in.

The purpose of break-in is to create that initial seal between the piston, ring and cylinder wall. You probably already know this but I'll say it just for clarity... That seal is is created by combustion pressure that propagates behind the ring applying an outward force against the cylinder wall. If you don't generate enough force to seat the rings in the first 50 or so miles then the rings will never be optimally seated. No kidding around, not making up stuff, just giving you the hard facts backed by lots of empirical testing from lot's of people with more experience and smarter than me and a lot of other people.

See post #75--I said not to baby it.

Break-in was not a big factor for oil burning on the CBR boards. Honda screwed up.

Great pic!

I was really anal when breaking-in my CBR. In addition to heat-cycling, (ala Humungus' post), I didn't ride the bike for long periods of time for the first 500kms, (40 minutes of riding then a complete cool-down). I read somewhere that heat was the worst enemy to a new motor(?)

So, I rode around in local subdivisions, (lots of stop signs), varying the RPM's constantly and rolling on the throttle smoothly, (I didn't just yank it open). I didn't strictly adhere to any RPM limits, either, (I wasn't redlining in every gear). But I didn't keep the motor in the high revs for long, at least at the beginning.

Summer of 2011:

Mods: Ohlins shock, braided clutch and brake lines, G-craft rear reservoir, TSR racing clutch slave cyclinder, Gilles shift-support, heli-bars, Japanese market OEM turnsignals. Yet to be installed: Woodcraft case covers, Harris rear-sets, (they can go lower or higher than the OEM rearsets), Throttlemeister bar-ends, Muzzy fan.

Perfect 1st day...

New bike, 28 degrees C, Adelaide Hills, Friday off work, Monday is a public holiday, who could ask for more?

Manual says no full throttle starts and avoid hard acceleration for 1st 500Kms or 300 miles.

I put 200Kms on her today in the Adelaide Hills - what amazing handling - this thing is so light and easy to ride. Good variety of twisties with bursts of moderate acceleration. Hit 8000 rpm in 3rd a few times. Things are pretty lively above 6000 rpm...

I see that "by the book", I should be shifting my FZ1 into 6th gear at 60 km/h (37.5 mi/h)... just sayin'.

Your K5 was the high water mark of their lineage, they got fatter and slower starting in 2007, not to mention pure ugly.

Great looking bike. I love the paint and I've always like white rims on bikes. Having said that, the MV F4 in the background gives me wood.

Must be a trend.

The R1 was one of the most beautiful, sleekest bikes out there and then Yamaha turned it into a warthog. Never understood that one.

And I love the look of the CBR except for its flattened nose. In 2012, Honda added a little more angle to make it look sharper.

For me, the exception is the ZX-10. It just looks mean and purpose built. Of course, I can't last on more than 15 minutes, but that's a different issue.

Very easy to clean, just use kerosene (AKA paraffin in some places) and a paintbrush then wipe off with a rag.
