I would say it makes a big difference some brands I have ran lasted 1500 milesbetween wear bars and cords while others have been toast in 200 miles. I burn through 8 to 9 sets a year so I tend to use my tires up as long as traction is acceptable. All tires loose some traction when the tread goes away but some are worse then others. The PR2 gets first very sticky and then very slippery as the last of the tread disapears.
