Gen1 Seat Options

Even after getting the foam replaced by Mean City Cycles, my azz still hurts after an hour or so. I see people selling and buying the Sargent and Corbin seats on this forum so it's hard to tell if people are selling because they don't like them but people are buying them. So if you have a Gen 1 and are using an aftermarket seat, let me know your thoughts-good and bad. thanks

The Corbin on my Gen I is nice, but I still get a little saddle sore after a few hours. I bought another style (Corbin) just to try and see if it could be better, and it was not as comfortable, so sold it.

They only show one model now but I swear there were options when I bought my Gen I. The one I have is more 'rounded' but the one I bought was 'flatter' - more like horse saddle vs. cupped like a Gen II. The saddle style suits me better.

I also put a corbin on my Gen II and it's better than stock, but not as good as the one on my Gen I.

I had a Corbin. It was ok, i did several long days on it. I'd probably still have it but needed some quick cash last year and sold it. I just purchased a Sargent but havent had a chance to ride it yet. Sitting on it on the bike it feels better...

The Corbin is HEAVY, and it will actually have you sitting higher (about 1-1.5 inches, so if you already tiptoe the bike while stopped, it may cause you to one foot it at stops...

Good read. 5 weeks is a deal breaker though.

Try your local auto upholstery shop

I took mine to a local upholstery shop, they also did my R1 seat. They built the front up some and carved me out a nice pocket for my butt to sit in and recovered it in synthetic suede which provides good grip and is weatherproof. Feels almost as soft as suede too. They took the time to make it the way I wanted, called me down for a fitting and let me ride it around a bit and make sure it was ok, made some adjustments and covered it. Took 3 days and cost $150.

I'm in Chattanooga, Tn. Funny thing is, I used to live in York, SC!! I worked in Charlotte and rode it nearly every day(winter included) on a (brand new then) 1997 Gixxer 750 or my old Virago 700!

Sargent much better than stock. Haven't tried a Corbin.

With stock could last about 45 mins before the first signs of discomfort showed themselves.

With the sargent I have stretched this out to 2hr +.

Getting the foot down regularly during commuting is a tad harder on the Sargent though (I have to sit quite forward due to my size) but the rear curve of the seat supports extrememly well during launch.

Custom looks like an awesome deal too. Apprarently these large bubble wrap things are the best for comfort but I've never tried one. (www.airhawk.com.au). You can either put one on top of the seat (works out OK if you're tall or touring) or maybe you can get one stitched into the stock seat.

Or maybe have a (close) friend take a plaster mould of your ass and send it to the upholstery people to use it as a template. After you're finished you can mount it on the wall in the garage as a conversation piece.

Regards

I got rid of my Corbin too - just didn't work for me. I'm interested to see what you think of the Sargent. I'm willing to try that out. Contemplating Airhawk/ Freedom Air Cushion as possibilities as well, especially since I can move them from bike to bike.

I've bought seats online for my old Harley. It just doesn't work. I bought good seats too; Mustang and Le Pera. When I sold them, I held the $$ while the buyer tried it out. One guy who was interested in my Mustang was in CA and returned it and I tore up his check. I'm meeting a local guy whose wife has been trying it for 2+ weeks tomorrow to collect the rest of the $$ and give him the passenger pillion. If I buy a seat, this is the route I'm going to take. If the seller doesn't want to hold my money and let me try it, well I'd probably not want to do business with that type of person because something's probably wrong with the seat.

We really don't have upholstery shops around here. Times are tough and the 2 that were around shut down. I'll keep my eye open for events and here for people selling to see if they'll let me try it out before I buy.

I have used the stock seat, corbin, and Sargent seats on my FZ1. The Sargent has been most comfortable and is what I am using. I have riden multiple 500 miles day in a row, SS1000, BB1500, SS2000 all on the Sargent. With any seat you are going to start feeling some discomfort over a period of time. I have found with gas stops and a little ibuprofen I can ride for as long as I want.

On my 2002 FZ1, the stock seat was good for about one hundred miles, and then it was rest/walk time for me.
Picked up a Sargent seat here from the classifieds about three years ago, and now i can go about two hundred miles, before i have to get off the device.
Now that being said, at 67 years of age, i want to stop at that mileage anyway, but not because my backside is killing me, as it did, with the o.e.m. seat. lol!
