As long as the rim isn't seriously out of balance, it's not needed.

In order to get a well balanced tire, most tires have a colorful dot that is stamped on the sidewall of the tire. This dot marks the lightest point in the tire and should be lined up with the valve stem in order to give the tire the best balance for your buck.

Good quality tires don't need/have a dot...

Michelin tires have no dot.

If you balance your wheel without a tire on it you rarely if ever even need to balance3 after a tire is installed.

Yup! None of the tires I've installed had dots on them.

When I used to pay "the man" to put them on, they used to put a crapload of weights on the rims. They also kept falling off. I noticed no difference without the weights, so I no longer bother.

~9,500~ miles. Can't complain.

BTW, I use the "redneck" style of breaking the bead.
Long 2x8.
14'' spare tire.
Block of wood.
Something heavy and low. (tractor, old car with flats, whatever)

I have a static balancer. 2 tricks I do when mounting my own tires:

1. The heavy spot of each rim all by itself is marked. I have yet to have a rim where the heavy spot is actually the valve stem. That way I align the spot on the tire (if there is one) with that spot instead of the valve stem.

2. I also balance the new tire/rim combo with only 1 edge on, spinning the tire until I achieve the least amount of settling. I don't go crazy with this - just check a few positions, especially with tires such as Michelins which don't have a light spot marked.

This usually results in minimal weights or no weights required to balance the fully mounted tire.

YMMV.

just dropped a ton of cash on a no-mar deal, the classic and static balancer with the extra clamps set.
so will save even more on fuel alone. and then the cost saving on having the tire shipped right to my front door. far less then the shops sell them for.
and i know the job was done right the first time.
and doing it my self it gives me another way to see the bike and keep a eye on how things are doing (maintenance deal here).
i spend more on maintenance then some spend on repairs...but i know my "toys" work and are reliable all the time.

I change them because I work at a car dealership and the rims fit in the tire changer at work. They won't fit on the balancer so I still have to take them somewhere to get them balanced which can be a hassle.

If you got a level floor, you can try balancing them using the axle with no brakes/spacers.

The last set of pr2's I mounted/balanced barely took 1/2 oz on either wheel.

Also, recommend going with a 55 profile on the back for better turn in, not 50.

changed my tire yesterday without the assistance of a machine (I used to live near a buddies shop, changing there was no prob) I used my bench mounted vise to break the bead on one side, then opened it up, put a 2x4 on the other side and broke the other bead, no prob. on off on the front, used the dynabeads for weight, then put a 16t sprocket on it, first ride is tomorrow with the new stuff

Doing it yourself is the only way you can b sure what did or didn't go on in a shop. Mechanics have a strong tendency to mess up more than they fix...

My brother and I are about to change my tire tomorrow. It will be my 1st time. I need to find a valve stem today. Is it a standard car like size valve stem. Can i get it at Adavanced Auto, or O'Reillys are on of those places? Anything special I need to ask for? Thanks in advance.
