R6 Shock setup thread

A few weeks ago, I upgraded the rear end of my gen 1 with a 09 R6 shock. I wanted to have a place were other R6 shock users could comment on their setup experiences. Post away. When you post your settings, please state your weight and riding habits. Are you old and slow, like me or a hot rodder etc. I am attaching the stock settings for reference.

Thanks. My shock is in the garage in the box waiting patiently for me (er my moto hubby) to do the upgrade. A thread like this will definitely be handy. I'm subscribed!

update...now using number 5 and 6(pillion) on preload , 14 clicks on low speed.....almost perfect. im liking the stiffer preload better. rider sag is around an inch now and handling is sharper than ever....................

My setup

Afternoon folks.
Here's what I'm running mine on at the mo.

Preload 4th position from bottom
High speed comp 3 full turns out
Low speed 16 clicks out
Rebound 15 clicks out

Pretty much the same as Luke and seems to work just fine. Might have a little twiddle over the next couple of weeks, but not much.

5ft 9in and 14 1/2 stone ( 203 lbs ) in full kit, mostly medium fast road riding without pillion.

Phil, oop North in Bolton, where the roads are shite and it rains a lot.

For the retar... err.... less than technically fluent among us, could anyone decipher this into something more along the lines of:

preload - x steps from full soft
high speed compression - x clicks from full soft/hard
low speed compression - x clicks from full soft/hard
rebound - x clicks etc.

As well, reference points of weight and riding style/ability...

Thanks.

Very close to the standard settings in the R6, which I guess makes sense as the linkage would have a similar effect on the damping as the spring... given the spring works well for most normal weight riders the standard settings look to be a good place to start.

I bought an 06 or 07 R6 shock a couple years back(can't remember witch) in the hopes of fitting it to my gen 1. I found the upper shock mount to be different. The R6 shock was 5mm narrower and the bolt hole is 2mm smaller then the stock FZ1 shock. How did y'all work around this? Or is my shock different?

Installed my r6 shock a couple of weeks ago. Wow, what a difference! Also makes a huge difference two-up. Very easy install. Took me a hour or so. Right now I'm using the settings suggested above. I moved from preload set at 5 to 4 after a long ride last week. 5 was a little hard for my taste.

I was a little worried about drilling out the top of the shock when installing. Looks like there is plenty of meat, so shouldn't ever be a problem.

Yep, has to be 2007, or newer. The body of the 2006 R6R shock, will hit that cross member just above it, and will not fit.
That being said, i can help you out with the correct model year shock kit, if you want it.

Thanks for the offer. I found a few on ebay, but thought I'd play with what I have first and see if I can make something work. It's suposed to rain all week anyway. Good time to tear the bike apart. I'd love to find away to mount the R1 ride height adjustable upper shock mount to my frame.
If I can't, I found some bushings with a 12mm O.D. and 10mm I.D. in 7,8 or 10mm thickness. seems like this would make a good alternative to drilling the shock.
just slide them between the fz1 12mm mount and R6 10mm bolt on either side of shock. and use washers with 12mm I.D. to fit over bushings.
What do you think?http://www.amazon.com/10mm-Nom-I-D-M...9923072&sr=1-4
