Aprilia SXV 550
'Been researching Supermotos ever since I got an opportunity to ride a DRZ.... I found a super sexy looking Aprilia..... but OMFG! What big maintenance requirements you have....
http://slorider.com/Aprilia/manuals/...eIntervals.pdf Change pistons and rings every 4k miles? OK, I'm sure that's a VERY conservative number but.... REALLY? Valve checks at the same time!? Most users on the net will do 600-700 mile oil changes.............. gahhh! Any idea why this bike and those like it have the maintenance intervals indicated? I get that it's a high performance machine intended solely for race use that just happens to be barely street legal; it wasn't meant to put down miles off track..... but pistons that need to be replaced every 4k miles? There HAS to be a legitimate reason for that... especially when considering that an SV650 twin doesn't even have a specified interval for pistons. Someone explain this to me. Though, it's so sexy even if that maintenance chart is legit it might be worth it:

Thats nice! I swapped bikes with a friend for a short time. KTM 625 Supermoto. As soon as I got on it I missed the 4 cyl power. He then proceded to wheelie my bike all over the place. I told him to. The KTM was nice though, I kept that thing wide open the whole time, just downshifting in the turns, it was all I could do to keep up.

Ask Ion about those.
Although I think they have the bugs worked out now. And Daryl, what you rode does not compare to that beast. It's a v-twin.

Back it in!
![]() There's one for sale 6000 initial asking price with 1k miles. Could probably get it for a bit less since dealer retail asking is about 5800 and trade in is 4000. For 5-5.5k for the ultimate in hooliganism.... seems like a good deal.... but then there's that maintenance.

My old KTM SM would smoke an FZ1 in the twisties around here. That Prilla would smoke the KTM.
Of course, it would have to be running in order to do that.

It's a race bike. Last I remember hearing from Ion was he was suing them to get his money back because it needed enough work to be a lemon and Aprilia wasn't paying the dealers to do it.

Check out www.apriliaforum.com/forums and read up on it. Many engine failures early on, but they did get it worked out eventually. What year is that one? I think the year after Ion's was when they became somewhat dependable, at least compared to the first ones. A friend of mine bought an older one and was going to try to fix it, but ended up selling it to a guy for a parts bike.

Not a real supermoto.... 400 pounds. No thanks.
690 SMC, now that's where it's at. I actually did look at an SMC at the dealer.

Which, when I found the 08 SXV I thought that was a damn good price.... though, apparently while the price may be right the value ain't so hot..... but it's soo sexy..... they should have just called it the SXE/SXY SuperModeltard; looks great and performs pleasurably when it wants to... but is high maintenance and finicky willingness to perform will likely drain you of your sanity... and money.

I test rode the Aprilia 450 in off-road trim shortly after they arrived in the states. More than enough power for off-road work. Not a bike for short people.
I can shred twisties on my plates GasGas EC300. The ultimate hooligan bike. 2 stroke, 6 speeds, Ohlins suspension and can be jetted to be smooth or violent. Off-road, some of my friends call me the "Violent Hillbilly". Stand too close and you will get used for traction.
