It Finally Happened: Phone Spam

I don't know how it happened but now every time I swipe my phone to open it LOUD, OBNOXIOUS, ads for games, investing in marijuana and other crap pops up. I've gone through the Apps settings and disabled both of the games I had downloaded and anything else that I didn't know for sure what it was. I still have the extremely annoying spam. I've decided to backup my contacts and reset my phone to get rid of it.

Anybody else have experience with this crap?

I've had spam calls happen that way (usually when swiping to wake up the screen), but none of that other stuff you mentioned. A little porn video might not be a bad thing, lol. I'm digressing......

Anyhow here's a thought. When on my last 2 vacation trips (one @ 12 days and the other @ 6 days), I did not get 1 single spam call of any kind! So I am thinking that these spammers are linked into the Google tracking system and know when you are home or sitting behind a desk to catch the call. I just find it real coincidental I only get the calls at those two times, for the most part, and not ever while riding on the bike. I don't have a data plan, so it's not internet or data usage related.

If you aren't sure what app is causing something like this you can often (at least on Android, forget the IOS steps) find it by going to Recent Apps->long press icon->App info. From there you can uninstall.

Just out of curiosity, where do you download games from? I have Android OS and only use Google Play Store verified games. Just usually puzzle style games, but I try different ones every now and then. I've never had this issue though.

You can try to find the app causing the issue by looking at "running services". You'll have to enable developer settings to view them.

More often than not, attacks like these happen when an app silently installs a malicious app. One of the games could have installed it. What's touch is that since it's another app, it's installed under a different name.

So next time the ad lips up, swipe down, go into settings, then developer settings, then view running services. Look for anything that looks out of the ordinary. Of you can't do d it then just factory reset the device.
