How much fun is this - where we are riding to today. Taking the girl on her first canyon run, up and down a sweet canyon to this...
May 18, 2007
The mountain festival season gets under way this weekend with two days of music at Estes Park's annual jazz event organized by saxophonist Max Wagner.
The festival, held in conjunction with the Estes Park Art Walk, runs from noon until 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in Performance Park at the west end of town.

Saturday's lineup has the Estes Park Big Band, followed by singers Wendy Fopeano and Tina Phillips supported by bassist Ken Walker's trio. Then, at 2:30 p.m., the festival's headlining group, the Brubeck Brothers Band, takes the stage.

The Brubecks in the band are Dave Brubeck's sons Chris Brubeck on bass and bass trombone and Dan Brubeck on drums. Mike De Micco's guitar is also part of the group.

In addition to the Brubeck -progeny, the festival also features a traveling exhibit exploring the life and music of Dave Brubeck that's open on both days of the festival.

After the Brubecks, singer Sheryl Renee wraps up Saturday with a 4 p.m. performance.

The free sounds pick up again on Sunday at noon with the O'Tones, a New Orleans-style brass band, the Mambotet, the a cappella Groove Society and Cique, the electric band led by keyboardist Jeff Jenkins.

You would think so but alas! We got just about to St Vrain Canyon and what do we see, a nice fat rain cloud with lightning, and more lightning. Oh, and more. So we cut it north and went for a root beer instead. Drat! Somethings we just won't drive thru. I really wanted to see the Brubeck Brothers, but maybe we can catch some of Sunday's show instead.

Too bad, sounded like a plan for a very nice day. Hopefully you will make the Sunday show and write up a report.

This is my favorite Diana on youtube ( I think). I prefer sparse instrumentation, and Diana`s piano solo is a good one.

My daughter and I were just looking at this website. I found a pic of the Peggy Gilbert in a magazine.

My daughter had a fit of being tired of being the only girl in jazz band again, so I am trying to buoy her up a little

New Orleans native Terence Blanchard on trumpet (superior!)

I really like the drummer. Nice style and sound. If you notice, he also switches left hand stick styles.

I would have liked to have seen the bass player on camera. He's really busy! Very few notes longer than a quarter.

Awesome. I've got a five speaker, subwoofer set up at home. And Peart really sounds good on computer YouTube.

That Buddy Rich clip can't be beat, though.

Return to Forever, Wynton+Ellis, New Jazz Quintet, Crusaders, Lester Bowie, too many others to list that I like. I grew up in New Orleans so I guess I am spoiled when it comes to jazz. I can go and listen to great music every night of the week. We have a smorgisbord of music down here. Believe it or not my favorite type of music is technical death metal which we can go and hear down here also.

I`m glad you mentioned Lester Bowie. NO is a great place for music.

What`s so technical about this tdm stuff?

OK, "technical" in this case refers to virtuosity.

Since we`re off on tangents...One of the nicest people I`ve ever met, playing something simple. This is probably the exact anithesis of tdm.
