Man injured in motorcycle accident to have sperm harvested
http://www.kcrg.com/news/local/9774057.html

IOWA CITY - A motorcycle accident brought a family and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics to the Johnson County Courthouse Thursday afternoon. The family is asking the hospital to do something it's never done before. It wants the hospital to harvest the sperm of their 23-year-old son, who is on the brink of death. His fiancee wants the option of starting the family they've planned, even if he's not here. And she's going to get her wish.

23-year-old Daniel Christy loved to ride his motorcycle.

“He wanted a Harley Davidson ever since he could say Harley Davidson," says Daniel’s father, Thomas Christy.

Sunday, an accident on that Harley Davidson in far southeast Iowa caused Christy severe head trauma. His family says a car cut out in front of him.

“Basically when he was skidding, the bike flipped over, and he was ejected off that into her car," says Thomas Christy.

Christy now lies nearly brain dead at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics with no hope of recovery. But his family wants to save his sperm, so his 23-year-old fiancée Amy Kruse can possibly have his child after he's gone.

“I know Daniel wanted to have two kids. We talked about it even before we were engaged," says Kruse.

Since Christy will be an organ donor, the family wants the hospital to also harvest his sperm, but the family's attorney says the hospital said no. The reason was it had never recovered sperm under Iowa's Uniform Anatomical Gift Act.

“They had never done it this way before. The act applies to harvesting eyes or organs for transplant into existing life, not to create new life," says the family’s attorney Lori Klockau.

But late Thursday, a Johnson County judge ruled the sperm falls under the act. The family says it's a sigh of relief in the midst of such pain.

“Our glimmer of hope in our second miracle since the first one didn't work out so well the way we wanted it too," says Kruse.

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics issued this statement to TV 9 News, “The hospital has a long-standing policy that strictly prohibits the discussion of matters related to ongoing legal proceedings."

But this morning, The Gazette Reports the hospital will not stand in the way of the ruling.

Christy's family tells me it's only a matter of days before he dies, which explains the urgency of the judge's decision Thursday.

The blind say hybrid cars pose a danger. Since they often run in city traffic with only the electric engines blind people that depend on the sound of cars to know if it is safe to cross are concerned they can't hear Hybrids

Maybe Hybrids should be required to have loud booming stereos?

Doctors save poisoned tourist using vodka drip

Quote:
BRISBANE, Australia - Australian doctors said they plugged a poisoned Italian tourist into a vodka drip after running out of the medicinal alcohol they would normally have used to save his life.

The 24-year-old Italian, who was not further identified, was diagnosed as having ingested a large quantity of ethylene glycol, a common ingredient in antifreeze that can cause renal failure.

Vomit Walk

Yesterday they had a Vomit Walk in Iowa City, home of the University of Iowa. It was to get people to support the upcomming vote on an ordenance to keep people under 21 out of bars there.

http://www.kcrg.com/news/local/10704401.html

Quote:
Iowa City - A Sunday morning in downtown Iowa City, pure peace and quiet.

That is, until the cleaning crew comes through. Then, all that's left is, peace, pieces of trash from the night before.

"We've been cleaning up since 6:00 a.m. and it's primarily litter, broken glass and an occasional pile of food," said Jan McDonald.

That is exactly what Gary Sanders wants to eliminate from downtown Iowa City.

"The whole drunken scene contributes to the entire atmosphere of the vomiting, the urinating and the smashing of windows and so forth," said Sanders.

Sanders says allowing 19 and 20 year olds into bars, where they're just supposed to hang out and not drink, is responsible for a lot of that problem.

Sanders says they drink anyway. So he organized a "Vomit Walk" to show people what he calls the extreme after effects.

To check it out, KCRG TV 9 met the cleaners before the walk to assess the situation.

On this particular Sunday morning, the cleaners said they only found one pile of vomit.

Later we found another pile hidden in wood chips.

"Five is a lot, and that's only happened about one weekend," said McDonald.

KCRG TV 9 tried to get some student reaction. Can you imagine how hard it is to find students at 8:00 a.m. on a Sunday morning?

That is part of the reason why medical insurance keeps rising, hospitals bill for all kinds of crap and people don't catch it because insurance is paying most of it. I've caught all kinds of stupid stuff. The most expensive was they charged my son for an overnight stay when he had his tonsil out, it was an out patient procedure, in at 8am discharged at 2pm.

More hospitals need to have upfront pricing, be able to tell you ahead of time what things will cost. Most can't do it now, ask them ahead of time how much a surgery will cost, the only one I have delt with that can tell you is the Mayo Clinic.

Dog Shoots Man

What's most interesting about this is that it happened to my cousin's cousin. I don't know what that makes him to me, so don't ask.

I wonder if the dog's name was Cheney.
