Anyone Into Contemporary Folk / Bluegrass?
I first got turned on to contemporary folk / bluegrass when I started listening to Alison Krauss and Union Station quite a few years ago. This is the kind of music I wish I could play.
Then I heard a band called Nickel Creek. Three young virtuoso's (including two siblings Sara and Sean Watkins) who play screaming instrumentals as well as sing. I saw that Sara Watkins had collaborated with Sarah Jarosz and Aoife O'Donovan; the latter two I was not familiar with. But their voices sure sound great together. So then I wondered about Sarah Jarosz. Only in her early twenties -- plays the mandolin, octave mandolin, guitar, banjo, and who know what else. Very soulful voice. Doesn't hurt that she's also cute as a button. Anyone else wish they could play like all these folks?

I'm an AKUS fan, brilliant musicians and Ms. Krauss has one of the sweetest voices in the biz, IMO.
She produced Nickel Creek's first couple records, I'm pretty sure. So there's that connection. And the big dude playing upright bass in that Smoothie Song video is none other than Robert Trujillo, the currest bassist for..... wait for it.... Metallica! ![]() I'm pretty sure Nickel Creek is on more or less permanent hiatus, has been for a number of years. Chris Thile (mandolin) has done quite a lot of collaborative stuff, and I see Sara Watkins making a name for herself as a solo artist. Not familiar with the others, but thanks for posting the vids. Good stuff! ![]()

Nickel Creek did go on hiatus after their third album, but got back together and put out a new album in 2014. They are currently still playing together as far as I know. All three also play solo and with others as well. Here's a NPR set they did in late 2014 I believe.

A friend (I guess now a family member as he recently married in) puts on a big Bluegrass festival here in LA every year, with a few shows throughout the year. He plays in his own band, too, and even gets to play Bonnarroo every year. I've gotten to get to know a lot of people in the scene through him over the years, and it's been very cool.
Check out anything that Critter is in -- maybe start with the Punch Brothers. (Chris Thile is also in that one.) Della Mae is a pretty amazing all-female group. There was a group here in LA called The Cousin Lovers that was GREAT, but I don't think they play any longer, sadly. Years ago I played bass in a side project with their fiddler, Craig Eastman. -T

Also, Abagail Washburn is pretty amazing, too. Beautiful voice, heckuva baritone banjo player. Married to renowned banjoist Bela Fleck. Here they are playing one of her tunes together.
I got to see her play with John Paul Jones (yes, that John Paul Jones) in a living room in Silver Lake with maybe 20 other people a few years back. Awesome. -T

I'm pretty uninformed about a lot of things. The first time I heard that song, I said, "That sounds like an electric banjo!". I didn't know there was such a thing.
I also didn't know what an octave mandolin was. Here is another NPR set - this one from Sarah Jarosz.

Interesting. I don't know if I've ever heard Blues & Bluegrass combined like that before.

I like it all, but people have taken bluegrass in many different directions and my favorites are the artists who intensify trad elements to make it even rawer, more powerful than the originals, or at least strive to.

I've been trying to learn the banjo for a couple years now, and subscribe to Sirius xm solely for the bluegrass channel.
