Online Profile

Does your place of employment review your online posting activity? How about your communications on your private phone.

Nothing new we've seen it coming for a decade but a few new WSJ stories about companies accessing phone records to see when employees wake, where they are, who they contact, and for how long got me wondering.

When I left the Govt./military work place in 2015 they were just starting to role out the phone/email communication deep dives. We were told that our phone calls and emails would be reviewed (not for content) but for who you communicated with and for how long. I suspect our Govt and every other other Gov State actors were reviewing the same data and the contents.

From those two legal data collection points they felt they would be able to pin point the key players and processes in the enterprise, I suspect they were also looking for the less than key players for the next reduction. We use to call the program "Six degrees of separations from God"

The WSJ articles were indicating that this type of surveillance is now being used widely in the private sector.

Do you worry about your online profile being researched by your current or future employer? Do you do anything to protect your profile? Have you given an employer the ability to review your online posts? Do you maintain multiple online personalities? Do you use your personal phone for work?

So if your personnel/work communications were "analyzed" would you be a key player (stud) or a dud, kinda like the old Barbie doll dating game.

If employers and/or anyone else bothered to examine my online life, they would become bored sh!tless in very short order.

I have no online profiles except motorcycle forum boards. If anyone went through my text messages would determine I’m an alcoholic degenerate asshole with very few redeeming qualities.

My employer couldn’t give a crap about our online lives. They have blocking software for blacklisted websites. Mainly to prevent idiots from surfing porn or accessing other VPN services. But thats about it.

So How are employers obtaining call records????

Theyíre not. Call detail records and mobile registration records are not given without a warrant.

Don’t add co workers as friends on social media. Simple as that. Keep everything else private.

Yah thatís what to was thinking too.

I spent 17 years in telecom and I had to sign a paper at some point stating that
I couldnít reveal private information to others and any monitoring of phone calls (yah we did that at times) had to be for trouble shooting purposes only.

As to the idea that an employer could know when Iím waking up and where I am at any given point. Eh. Well maybe if you work for Palantir. They know everything!!

Isleo, do you have a link to any of those articles?

Totally agreed with this.

While I do have a FB account I will never add anyone I work with or worked with. Iím amazed by how many coworkers do this.

But the profiles are sketchy and confused if you never had a Facebook account. They probably couldn't even recognize a picture of me, and probably have other peoples data in my file.

I've built social media products. There's a reason I don't Facebook but own the stock.

That said my career means I don't have to worry about these issues.

Other than a few motorcycle and automotive forums, I have no social profile. But I'm retired anyway, so who cares.

I know several people who's only cell phone is supplied and paid for by the company for which they work. I would guess those companies monitor those phones any way they see fit.

I've been told by manager not to connect my cell to my company laptop and when working from the house I bring down all NAS and servers. Except Kali.

If they asked me for consent, I'd say no. If they asked about something I posted, anywhere, I'd tell them to flip off, it's none of their business. The government, in many cases, doesn't ask for consent. Sometimes they get warrants, sometimes (yes) they don't. If you think it's all clean and by the book, well, you're living in Mayberry RFD.

I once was asked to sign an employee policy book that allowed "senior management" to search my vehicle if they deemed necessary. Since I don't voluntarily give up my rights, 4th Amendment or otherwise, I politely redlined that section, initialed, then signed and returned the book.

In general I try to maintain a low profile online, but FB has so many willing sheep that you don't even have to have an account or provide info about yourself. They glean it from others that know you and tag or mention you. Their robots work tirelessly and efficiently 24/7/365 learning about everyone and everything. Bastards.

What's it gonna be Neo, red pill or blue pill?
