Camouflaged Gravel oh no!

Ok so a little over a week ago myself and two other riders took a weekday of to go play in the mountains. I was very cautious early on as I had seen lots of gravel on my local roads recently. After the first 2 hours of riding on roads like Blood Mountain. Richard B Rustle and Hwy 74 I was lulled into a sens of confidence that the recent rain showers has removed the gravel and the pavement was clean. Is I neared the tight and fun portion of War Woman Rd I was really getting to feeling like I was one with the bike again. I would brake late, drop in to the corner and accelerate hard on the exit. (This was such a video game kind of feeling). So corner after corner the road is my playground. The pavement turned to a much lighter color (almost white). I though of this as the old pavement which I feel is more grippy than new pavement. So I am braking later and rolling on the throttle even earlier. The last corner before I lost my confidence was just like the others. I came out on the power and picked my braking zone. I waited and then applied the brakes just where I wanted. This is when I realized that I was not slowing but was starting to slide. Anti lock brakes where helping me not to low-side but I needed to loose more speed and they were not helping much in that regard. The problem was gravel on the road surface. This stuff blended into the color of the asphalt and I had overlooked it. I managed to get a good bight on the pavement in very short patch that did not have gravel and this brought my speed down to 20 mph or so. but I was now in the thicker gravel at the edge of the road. The shoulder of the road was 6' wide and looked to be soft and luxurious grass. I could try to steer on the gravel or try my hand in the grass. I choose the grass even though on the other side of the grass was easily a 40' drop . I was down to probably less than 10 mph and tried to steer off of the grass back onto the road only to have my bike low-side (fall over). I was very luck neither I nor the bike had more than a scratch.

Today's tale of caution is to remember winter may be gone but that bitch left some traps behind. Ride safe, and don't plan on the luck I had repeating itself. I'm pretty sure I used mine and all of the luck from most of you up on this one.

Ride Safe

Glad you managed to slow it down under control. That's a successful outcome.

Thank John. It was a big surprise to me but I got careless as I started out my day looking for gravel and once I went several hours on roads that I used to seeing gravel on and there was none. I got lazy. I wonder had I been on a bike without anti lock brakes if the outcome would have been the same or worse. *(I'll just have to try and not think about that too much).

Highway 14 in AR has white type pavement on the eastern end.
Kinda scarey.
