Help with Finding a Host for a Club's Website

I belong to a local club here in Louisville, and we need help with getting a web site up.

We had one that was set up a while ago, but it has been hacked and the current web host is worthless about getting it back up (Arvixe).

So I'm thinking I need to find a new web host that can offer a lot more help, as well as be a lot easier to use. The old Arvixe web site was build with WordPress. Clunky, impossible to figure out, etc.

It was recommended to try Wix. Supposed to be more user friendly, a lot more support, etc.

All we need is an informational web site, with a link to our Facebook page. We won't live stream, take money or donations, sign people up for anything, have anyone sign in, etc. We don't need to advertise, measure clicks, be listed on search engines, etc.

I also need some advice on how to get our Web site name away from the old host and give it to the new host for the new web site.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I use Godaddy and have been happy with it for several years now.

For the host name, you will have to remove it from your current providers DNS and then add it to your new one. It may be easier just to buy a new one.

If you sign up with a new host, you can either edit the DNS entries yourself and submit them or have the host do it for you. Godaddy will do it for you.

I was with Lunarpages for many years, but their spam filters were pretty much non-existent and their tech support offered no help other than suggesting I buy an expensive service that would do it. I switched to Godaddy. They did the DNS updates for me and their built-in spam filters are much better. I still get some spam but it's about 10% of what it was before.

It takes a bit of time for the DNS entries to filter out to all the DNS servers all over the world, so plan for a day or two of down time so that can happen. Also send out an email to regular users to refresh their browsers so that the new pages are loaded.

So GoDaddy hosts web sites? Thought they just provided names.

They host - many different options and pricing. I had my domain there for years, still do for email but no longer host a web site.

Edit DNS. Got it. How? Do I go to our name company (Name Cheap) and simply change these settings?

Yep, that's about it. Find out what the nameservers of your new host are and put them in there. Submit, upload your files to your new site, and wait for the DNS servers to update.

Nice! I added it to the DNS. It still seems to be going to the old web host though.

I think you need to remove the DNS entry from the old web host too.

Seems to be working now. The tech person said it takes a while for all the servers in the internet web land to see that the web name has a new host and should go there.

The company that has the name for us (NameCheap) is different from the new web hosting company. Which is good, because if I had it with the old web host company I'd be in trouble, as they are idiots (Arvixe).
