#$@%@ fruit flies!!!!!

About 2 days ago we started noticing some fruit flies in the kitchen. Those few flies have humped away until they are no longer "a few".... The damn things are taking over!! I've cleaned everything in the area they are hanging out and tried a few homemade traps today......none of them have worked worth a shit. I googled and what I found said to put some vinegar in a pan with a piece of fruit and a few drops of soap....supposedly the flies would land on the water and drown..... After a whole day of sitting out only about 5 of the little bastards were stupid enough to do so. The other trap I tried was to stick a piece of banana in a glass jar, put plastic wrap over the top and poke a few small holes in the plastic....supposedly the dumb bastards would go through the holes and not find their way out. Not ONE fly was in that trap when I got home.... AGGHH!!!

I did find a new use for the Dyson vaccum though.... I sucked up every little bastard I saw and they had no chance of escape. I don't want to have to do this every day though.......anyone have any other suggestions on taking care of this problem???

seems like i heard somewhere if you leave a glass of red wine out they will come to it (because the smell is similar to rotting fruit) and drown in it because of the booze)

oh, another idea. i think they like it pretty warm so turn the heat off for a couple days. the women might get a little cranky, but hey, do you want fruitflies or not?

I get those seasonally, too. The shop-vac is my solution. Plus it's fun. Also works on pesky wasp nests.

The trouble is getting ahead of their reproductive cycle. Otherwise they just keep coming back. You need to get rid of ALL their normal food sources (any fresh fruit sitting out, etc.) and just be very diligent about getting every one you see for about four days. You should be able to get 'em all eventually. You can leave the traps out, but I think your best bet is frequent visits from Mr. Dyson.

RR, have you thought about removing their food source?

It's all Kim's fault. Every morning she uses the blender to make herself some fruit smoothie thing using fresh fruit. Some of it didn't get poured down the disposal and they decided to have a little orgie in the goo.

Kim was not pleased when I pointed out the fact that she has been eating fly eggs every morning she mixes her fruit.

Just a suggestion,
do you have any floor or mop sink drains that may have
not been used for a long time?
If so, the p-trap below the drain may have dried out
(that is, not holding water to block drain smells or insect passage)
and them little buggers could be coming from there. (inside the drain)
They do live and breed there, I see it all of the time where i work.
If that is the source, you could pour some water back in to seal the trap,
or if you do not intend to use it regularly, cap it off with a drain plug.

I forgot to ask, do you have fruit trees in your yard or nearby?

I bet it is all Kimb's fault. She's just so SWEET, the fruit flies can't help but be attracted.

(yeah, dipps... you're just pissed YOU didn't think of that.)

When we would get them in the restaurants we would pour bleach down the drains it always seamed to help. They love soda fountains. Sanitize everything helps too but the resturants were always big on wiping everything down all the time. They love anything sweet smelling.

Wish I could help, but I can't get over the thought of what you must look like running around the kitchen with a vaccuum cleaner, cussing, and pointing it at things only you can see, and the smug look of satisfaction when you suck one of them "little bastards" up. After two, or three, do you go into "the pose"? Please, Kim, get pictures.......

I used that for my sig line for quite awhile, Faa Q. It's a good one. It may be a Groucho quote.

Years ago I took a genetics class in college and the professor said this at least once a week while we were manipulating drosophila genes. I guess he thought it got funnier as we went along. It didn't.
