Amazing pics of the B29s.

Note the lack of gun turrets on the EG compared to the other 29s.

Also, fwiw. Our next door neighbors in the early 70s were the Tibbets'. Their uncle Was one Paul Tibbets.

Pilot of the Enola Gay for the Hiroshima mission.

Thanks, guys. Here's another one I thought was pretty cool. Not sure how he was able to take these -- he was a aircraft tech and was also in the photo corps at some point. He initially went completely through flight school, but was "washed-out" at the end by a psychologist due to a slight speech impediment. I guess at some point he went on an actual combat mission.

I guess the Japanese didn't have anything that could fly high enough to shoot at them by that point in the war.

Is this a scan of the original you have? I ask because this very same shot is on the Air and Space Museum magazine on Pinterest of all places!

Also on a feed from a guy I follow on Twitter.

That B29 your dad is in, apparently is still around in the Museum of Flight in Seattle!

Pretty much. Intercepting a B29 at 30,000 feet was almost impossible as that was towards the limits any of the Japanese fighters at the time. And if there was a fighter escort, forget it.

In this specific case the Enola Gay and Bockscar were two of a dozen or so special versions of the B29 that were designed specifically to carry atomic weapons. Modified bomb bays, removal of guns and other "non essential" stuff.

There were several B29s on the Hiroshima/Nagasaki attacks, only one had a bomb and there was no fighter escort.

I guess I can't say for sure. The print was in a box of photos my Dad brought back with him from the Pacific. I got them from my Mother's house when she passed away in 2012, and my Dad passed away in 1977, but she always told me he had taken the photos (except the ones he is in -- no selfies in the 1940's). So I can't ask either one.

There were no negatives in the box -- I assume those would have been property of the Army Air Corps.

I mentioned he was in the photographic corps for a while, so there are several possibilities, including:

1. He took the photo and as it would have been property of the Air Corps, it was used as they saw fit.
2. Another photographer in his group took the photo and gave a print to my Dad.
3. My Dad could have printed it as part of his photographic training and was not associated with it all.

I guess I'll never know.

Pretty cool ole' No. 54 survived. He would get a kick out of that!
