Protons with Lowers (gen 2)

So I got my protons a few weeks ago and got them all installed. Not real happy but everything worked out. First the good news. They are super bright and look pretty good.

Now the bad.

1. I was under the impression that they had a factory connector so I wasn't expecting to do any wiring. Probably my fault, I read into "No cutting required to install - custom fit for your bike" Technically I did have to cut wires.

2. Programmable - choose from 3 exciting blinker affects, including
-Fade-in/fade-out
-Strobe (multiple flashes per blink)
-Standard blink
Actually you can't program the unit and to change the blinker affect you have to rewire the unit. Not a big deal but just not as cool as I was hoping for $90.00

3. I have lowers on my bike so the signals took some customizing to fit. The signals are about 1mm larger then the hole and there is no backing in the lower hole. So the supplied washer was completely useless. I had to create a custom backing for the signal that covered the backside of the hole. It was also a bit of a pain the get the signal centered given it only overlapped the hole 1mm. I had to crank down on the nut to get the blinker to stay in place so I am hoping I don't have the same problem with the screw coming loose.

4. Not a big deal but I added shrink tubing around the wires. Again for $90 I would have expected the use of a larger wire or some protection for the wires.

I just installed my Proton flush mounts and I have a question. The bike had a LED rear turn signal light when I bought it and I installed the pod lights mod and then I installed the Protons and I'm not sure whats going on but my dash indicators stay lit now and the right blinker blinks intermittently even when off and the tail light and brake light stopped working. Everything was working fine until I installed the Protons. Can somebody please set me straight on this??

I just narrowed it down to the pod lights. If I unhook them, everything works as advertised. With them connected, my tail&brake light does not work and the dash indicators are dimly lit. Do I need a different relay??

MPS,

The proton lights should be plug and play. Their built in circuitry compensates for resistance so the flash rate is normal. At least that's how mine worked.

When I added LED rear turn signals, my flash rate was effected. I added a LED flasher relay like this to get things back to normal;

IIRC, they relay is located under the rear passenger seat on the right side.

Thanks for the reply. I have re-done everything and triple checked my connections and this is what I have. If I leave the pod lights unhooked, everything works perfect. If I hook them up along with everything else, my taillight and brake light don't work and the indicators on the dash stay lit. Obviously I can run w/o the pod lights but I was hoping that I could have it all. I have tried the Tridon 552 and an electronic relay from NAPA and they didn't work either. I'll give the ELFR relay a try next I guess. Unless anybody has more input on this??

Protons are now coming with the proper Yamaha connector already attached - was a very pleasant surprise.

I know this particular thread was old, but in my search here about them, a lot of folks had issues with the wiring. Since I purchased a set, I thought I'd put those concerns to bed for anyone in the future - and I didn't want to start a new thread. You are correct though, they are awesome.
