Lightbulb handy free software (and computing tips)

i'm not sure about everyone else, but i'm always on the lookout for handy free software programs to enhance my computing experience. i've learned of quite a few handy free programs out here already, but i figured that starting up a thread on it would not only be beneficial to me, but anyone else who feels the same way. so i'll start out with a couple of nice free programs that i'm aware of, as well as where to find them online.

first off, two basic ones....
spybot search and destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/

ad-aware (free version)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

avg anti-virus (free edition)
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php
OR....
avast! anti-virus (free edition)
http://www.avast.com/

(i prefer avast! myself )

mozilla
http://www.mozilla.org/products/mozilla1.x/

firefox web browser
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

thunderbird email
http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/

google toolbar (with popup blocker)
http://toolbar.google.com/

any password (password storage)
http://www.romanlab.com/apw/

and that's about it for now. so what else is out there that's worthwhile???

That Google toolbar thing is great. Works well and I have had zero problems with it.

CW Shredder got rid of a browser hijacker for me that neither Adaware nor Spybot could completely fix, the damn thing kept coming back! After it cleaned up the mess, it instructed me how to prevent it from happening again, by installing some patches.

Free CW Shredder download here.

Spybot is very similar to Ad-Aware, but it sometimes finds things AA doesn't, and vice-versa. I run 'em both periodically.

Get Spybot free here.

Browser hijackers should be shot!

BR

(Edit: DOH!.. I see dipps already had Spybot listed! Dunno how I missed that )

Its open source and as he said, its covered under the GPL.

Look here and download away;
http://www.mysql.com/products/licens...e-license.html

If that dont work for ya, I just took a quick peek at a P2P service and it was there for download.

I find this a useful utility:

http://www.poppeeper.com/

It monitors multiple e-mail accounts and let you read and delete mail on the host for each account monitored.

Dipps, Google is incredible. You can even look up phone numbers on it.

I hear a fair bit of bitching about Google in the biz, but I think they are just jealous of a company that sticks to what matters, doesn't piss off customers with too much flully ad crap, and manages to make a little money too.

wow... jon is still alive. nice to see you could join us again, jon.

and poppeeper does look like a handy little program. i'll have to check that out.

'beet, google rocks. i'm still curious about the upcoming gmail thing, but i think that page i reference above is about the perfect home page in my book. nice and simple, loads up right away with no delay, plenty powerful and efficient.

i'll also throw powertoys for xp out there as some good free software. i think my favorite utility is the virtual desktop manager.

and if you like optimizing your computer by tinkering with the registry (not recommended for everyone), the following website is handy dandy.

I honestly don't care much about free software seeing how I have access to all of the expensive stuff at no cost.

What I like is stuff that is useful, regardless. Here is one source of information I have found useful, and it is of course free...
