Windows 10 Giveaway?

I presume many of you have the Windows 10 prompt on your taskbar right now. Read about it, the disadvantage seems to be loss of control over updates, loss of media center (don't care) and a few other seemingly minor issues. I will probably upgrade my 2 Windows 8 machines (kid computers) as test dummies. The free upgrade offer will last for a year, I plan to wait a few months for the bugs to work out a bit.

So what is MS up to here, giving away Win 10? I can't imagine they are doing this for our benefit - there has to be an agenda that my admittedly modest geek powers are unable to detect. I gather people are so happy with Win7 that MS has to do this to get them to switch and then pay money for the multitude of Apps they will peddle. I fear Win10 will become nagware. Oh well. Will keep a good image backup (do that anyway) any machine I upgrade so if it does to sh%t I can revert back.

Lots of good questions, many of the same ones I have. I am very concerned with updating my business machines, will likely update my personal machines first and see how they do.....after a while when they have the bugs worked out.

Features that are going away -

If you have Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 8 Pro with Media Center, or Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center and you install Windows 10,
  1. Windows Media Center will be removed. (Don't care)
  2. Watching DVDs requires separate playback software (Don't care)
  3. Windows 7 desktop gadgets will be removed as part of installing Windows 10. (Don't care)
  4. Windows 10 Home users will have updates from Windows Update automatically available. Windows 10 Pro and Windows 10 Enterprise users will have the ability to defer updates. (Don't care)
  5. Solitaire, Minesweeper, and Hearts Games that come pre-installed on Windows 7 will be removed as part of installing the Windows 10 upgrade. Microsoft has released our version of Solitaire and Minesweeper called the “Microsoft Solitaire Collection” and “Microsoft Minesweeper.” (Don't care)
  6. If you have a USB floppy drive, you will need to download the latest driver from Windows Update or from the manufacturer’s website.(Don't care)
  7. If you have Windows Live Essentials installed on your system, the OneDrive application is removed and replaced with the inbox version of OneDrive. (Don't care)

Why free? I dunno. Apple has been doing free updates for awhile now as well. Maybe just getting on that bandwagon? Want to get as many people up to date as fast as possible?

I'll wait.

I'll wait for the early adopters to eat all the bullets before proceeding. They are so good at that.

Thanks Des, you gave me the reason to stay with 7 as all of those things you say don't care, well I do care so screw 10. If they keep going the way there going it might be time to go back to Linux and tell MS....!

The other concern I have is I hate upgrades, prefer clean installs, but my understanding of these things is that the old OS is set aside in a folder (windows.old) so it would be a cleanish install and that programs would have to be reinstalled. My main Win7 machine has been running perfectly for 3 years or so.

Maybe someone with greater nerd powers than I can elaborate.

The big reason I've heard for pushing Windows 10 for free is that Microsoft doesn't want to have to keep updating Windows 7/8. They supported Windows XP for twelve years - that wasn't cheap. If they can get the vast majority of the user base on Windows 10 and phase out support for 7 & 8 within the next few years, they will save billions.

You think that is odd. MS is known for their GUI interface, it is what launched them into the IT world. They are now going to start stripping their server OS down to bare bones, small install footprints, no gui with the design to all be managed remotely. That is where we are going server side anyway but losing that aoption will sort of suck. Sometimes you want to turn a server over to an application owner rather than hold their hand .... The next 10 years should be interesting for MS.

I "think" I read somewhere Microsoft 10 is free for the first year only, then there is a charge. Could be wrong though.

Microsoft seems to be moving backwards with their new Windows releases. I am very puzzled as to why they think that stripping things out and minimizing the gui is what customers want.

Because Windows had the reputation to have become a huge bloatware. Furthermore, they have been attacked/sued countless times now by competitors and lobbies for intergrated softwares that violated anti-trust laws. So they are going like all the big companies these days, reducing potential liabilities andgoing all out on reputation. We are going to end up paying for it though....They will make the money one way or another....

As for the trust in Windows 10, my Crystal ball is telling me it will be a good one. Microsoft is almost as indefictible as the Moore law when it comes to their releases: one great, followed by one really really crappy, then a good one, then bad again and so on.....

Windows 95 Great
Windows 98/Me Crappy
Windows XP Great
Windows Vista extra Crappy
Windows 7 Great
Windows 8 super dupper extra Crappy
Windows 10......

I think Windows 10 renders a lot of the earlier Office products useless, which means a lot of folks will have to upgrade.
