Ran into this guy last week on vacation. A REAL motorcyclist, IMHO. I love talking to guys like this. Real motorcycle people are nothing if not interesting. The closest thing to protective gear he had on were his flip-up sunglasses. Notice the walking cane. He had Ghostrider painted somewhere on the bike. It didn't have a seat, just some pieces of rubber, like car floor mats or something, draped over the subframe. He said he also had an '80-something Goldwing. That was his big bike.

I would like to view him that way. But I just can't get over thinking he's just stupid for not wearing gear.

It's what we did in the 70s. But we know better now.

It's not the law here and shouldn't be. But it just reflects a smidgeon of common sense.

The guys I talk to like that who don't wear gear typically come up with some really nonsensical rational for not wearing a helmet, for example.

The last guy I spoke with outside Home Depot actually said that whenever he crashes he never hits his head. There you go: no helmet needed.

There's a lot of people who do dangerous hobbies and dangerous ports. But I respect the ones who have fun but are smart enough to mitigate the risks.

And I think it sets a bad example.

Guess I've just seen too many of these Thunder Beach participants ride though town on their Harleys twice a year with their Long Ranger dew rags, no proper gear, and an attitude that they are taking over the town, clogging the rodes with rolling roadblocks and yelling obscenities at soccer moms just trying to get home for daring to be on their road.

No Oop. WE were the ones on the rented Harleys terrorizing the locals.

This guy WAS a local, riding down to the Exxon in this little town on his custom Magna to get a soft drink.

You're probably the last person I can imagine terrorizing anybody. And I know you wear gear.

I've just been so pissed by the Harley guys around here, lately.

They ride through the local outdoor mall where people are trying to enjoy a nice meal at the cafes. And they cruise through stopping in front with their straight pipes purposefully making as much noise as they can. The pipes aren't even enough, they have to have these obnoxious horns and other sound-making devices that I don't even know what the f they are.

The guy in the picture going to the store for an orange soda doesn't seem like one of those, so I don't want to generalize. I'm actually fascinated with his little fender ornament.

Excuse the rant.

LOl, I had a dude tell me that too once. My response was " I X-ray and CT people every week who thought the same thing, and a few of them don't/didn't make it."

We are in a no helmet law state. I see guys like that riding around daily, and not just one, but most. Yesterday we went for a ride, because I take Mondays off after teaching, and it's always a good day for riding. It occurred to me that I almost wish I lived in a helmet law state just so I wouldn't have to see it and shake my head all the time.

But I don't mean I'm for or against helmet laws, I just hate to see it.

In CO, year after year, the fatality rate of motorcyclists is around 12% of all fatal accidents, even though motorcycles are 2% of registered vehicles. And you know, even though they are 2%, a fair amount of those are never ridden, rarely ridden, and not ridden very far. Of those fatalities, 66% are not wearing a lid.

But well, it's Darwin at work, what are ya gonna do? I am to the point I don't even like moving the bike around the garage without a lid on. I figure it will be the one time I trip over a footpeg getting off, and me and the bike go over into the car, and lights out.

We moved from one part of Florida to another and noticed a big difference.

In Gainesville 9 of 10 riders wore helmets.

Here 9 of out 10 don't.

There are a lot more Harley types. But I don't think that fully explains it, as the local sportbikers don't seem much better.

It doesn't hurt anybody else, so it's their right to be dumb. I just don't understand why.

And I don't think that their passenger women understand the limitations of the bikes they're on or what kind of danger they're in without any gear whatsoever.

I'm gonna guess that Mike draws the line at the helmet in the bedroom?

Cool cloud formations last night, flying eastbound near Naples, FL. Flight from Ft Lauderdale to Jax was a real white knuckle deal....in the soup and lots of turbulence the whole way.....thankfully it was only about an hour.

Yeah, on my way to physical therapy today I saw a guy on a crotch rocket wearing shorts, tank top, sneakers, no eye protection, no gloves and no helmet. Brain donor in waiting...

Went to Glastonbury a week ago. Really cool place . This is part of the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey which is the site of (alledgedly) the first Christian Church in the UK. The Abbey was sacked during the Reformation in the Middle Ages (1500's) and everything of use or value was looted. The fact that these pillars still stand after 800 years is a testament to the stonemasons' skill.
