Cool experience, Tina. One of my friends is a falconer, and just trapped an owl to try for the first time. Brought one of her hawks to hunt on our property a few years back. That was magnificent to watch! She has a blog - http://www.ihadalifeonce.com/

and yes, of course!

I'm not sure what I think about falconry. On one hand, a lot of them rehab injured birds, and the birds are often, well, they can leave if they want. I'm not keen on the idea of trapping birds or getting into nests to get young. But it's not something I'm for or against, if you get my meaning. Thanks for sharing that, I do like data.

It's encouraged by the authorities. With intrusion into their habitat, it's hard for young birds to make it to maturity, so these are conservation efforts. They hunt with them for a year (typically) then they are released back into the wild. It's heavily regulated.

That's an amazing story T. Eagles winter here too but I have never seen one that size. If I had the job of capturing that eagle, I am sure the thought of a nasty death by talons would have crossed my mind more than once. Great job and thanks!

I've seen that sign, and the picture doesn't convey how ENORMOUS the sign is. You can see it for miles.

I'd like join the others here in giving props to Tina and Mike for their part in rescuing the Eagle. Hopefully it'll recover.

My guess is that Tina and Mike have positive balances in their Karma accounts.

Both of these signs are in Red Lodge, MT. The top one isn't politically correct anymore, but it's a pretty cool sign

Vegetarians would say that second one isn't politically correct either.

Hey, I think I know turkey run inn!

Good news on the eagle, she ate almost 3/4 a rat yesterday, but not until the rescue skinned, cubed and fed it to her with forceps, after an initial refusal to eat, she took to it. No word on the lab results yet.

Shucks folks, just going around trying to do a little good in the world.

Great photos!

FWIW in theory we can see it from Chicago, I guess, because we always decide to divert north to the cheese castle and add a couple hours to our drive, wherever we are going!

I cashed out my karma account with a sighting of a good size flock of Snow Buntings up at Burgess Junction, coming back from dropping the eagle off. It as a "lifer" for me, a bird I've wanted to see for years and there were 40 of them. I had to get out in the 14 cold and blowing snow to try to get a better shot, but never did get a clear one. Still, it was all good.

Well, I had other “sign” photos I was going to post, but my laptop took a dirt nap on me. Taking it to the repair shop—don’t know if I’ll lose everything or not.

Oh no, Vern, I hope you get it running and get back in here with some photos!

Which reminds me to back mine up to the external drive I saved from my last OJ on the keyboard disaster.

4/7 Clayton, NM

And Carl, I love the MT signs. One of my biggest regrets was not actually going into the M&M Bar before it closed. I'll have to dig around and see if I took a pic of the sign.

5/7 M&M Cigar Store, Butte, MT

Beat poet Jack Kerouac stopped by for a visit and wrote the following description for Esquire Magazine in March, 1970:

"It was Sunday night, I had hoped the saloons would stay open long enough for me to see them. They never even closed. In a great old-time saloon I had a giant beer. On the wall was a big electric signboard flashing gambling numbers ...What characters in there: old prospectors, gamblers, whores, miners, Indians, cowboys, tobacco-chewing businessmen! Groups of sullen Indians drank rotgut in the john. Hundreds of men played cards in an atmosphere of smoke and spitoons. It was the end of my quest for an ideal bar..."

Eagle update:

Eagle update:

I got the results back from our state lab on the lead level. 1ppm is considered the highest it could be and still not kill the bird. Her level is 11ppm! So this evening I started her on the injections to counteract the lead in her system She'll get two shots a day for five days and then we'll recheck the level. If necessary that shot series will be repeated.

She also tossed up the rat pieces she ate last night so I've started tubing her with a liquid high calorie, critical care diet. It's very stressful to have to do these procedures but they are the only things that may save her. I will say her attitude is still good.

Because this is a young bald eagle it may have come from fishing weights ingested after it caught one.

So far she's still standing. I"m going to try and get her to eat some venison steak today. Just a few pieces and hope she keeps it down.

My mom is 89 and loves animals. I’ve been telling her about your kindnesses with the big bird, and she hangs on every word. She really cares. Good luck on that eagle, Tina. Thanks for keeping us posted.

Oh yeah, I have a probably dumb question. What sort of numbering system is being used in these photos?

Good question, and I keep goofing up myself. It takes a round or two to get the hang of it, but the general idea is each week, each person posts seven photos over seven days, and numbers each as 1/7, 2/7 and so on. But there are no hard and fast rules. If someone only posts 3, or posts 10, or posts 7 all in one day, that's fine. The goal in having seven over seven days is sort of....if you go back and think "I have three great photos of that, but the one I saw the other day would make a great photo too" you have time to go out and get it, if you are so inclined.

Then the last person who picks the theme picks the next person to pick it, which makes it a little more random, because I'm not just running through lists or people who are most actively doing it. But folks forget, and that's okay, we'll keep nudging it along.

Tell your mother hello from me, and if she likes nature photos, she or you are welcome to friend me on facebook, that's 99% of what I post. Photos du jour will probably be eagles, owls and moose. PM if you want the link.
