Happy hour 1918. Sadly, I don't know who is in the photo. Taken from a scrapbook that has several photos of my great grandparents.

My paternal grandfather, on the left, aboard the USS Hugh W. Hadley (DD774) during WWII off the coast of Okinawa after the battle. The ship was saved from being sunk after multiple kamikaze hits.

He passed back in Aug '99. I still miss him.

Today would have been my dad's birthday. I miss him, he was a great guy. Here he is in 1969 in Panmunjom in the building they still hold talks in between North and South Korea. The other side of the room he is in is in North Korea. The MP looks surprised at the picture, I think my dad wanted a picture of him there for history.

Photos like that always come to mind when I see a very old man, and think about all they have been through, and that they were once a very young man.

This is my maternal grandmother's grandfather. So my great-great-grandfather. I'm not 100% sure which side he was on, her mother's or fathers, but I think he might on her mother's side, Adolph Schupbach.

Grandma took care of him in his later years, and also because she needed a place to go when she had my half-aunt out of wedlock. I always love his countenance, he looks very Walt Whitman-esque.

my maternal grandfather, and his car out on the farm. The farm is still in the family, and I'd guess the car is somewhere out in the woods, rotting away.

He's been gone about 15 years already, but I guess he was always a handy sort of farmer, always fixing something. Here's a 'tractor' he built back then...Later he'd end up with Minneapolis Molines, way later. hehe..

How fun! That first one would make a great Christmas card. And I love the farm is still in the family.

This is my parent's wedding. Maternal grandparents on the left, paternal on the right, mom and dad in the middle. This is probably the first photo I'm in.

The family farm is now something over 100yrs old. The house is still standing, and sometimes lived in. The barn still has a full piano in the hay loft...I guess the family used to invite the neighbor farmers over to party in the barn a long time ago....Cool story about it tho....the family owns a plot of land they call 'the back 70.'

It's, as you would expect, a plot of 70 acres of tall grass and just natural habitat...that's never been touched by farm implements. Story says nothing has ever been done out there...

Nice family photo, btw. All 7 of ya.

There is a picture of that building from the outside in quazz's border library thread.
I was wondering if that was the purpose of a building being in both nations.

In absence of a new theme, these sort of go with the old photos.

To my surprise, there was a $100 note hiding behind the $10.

Neat! Did you find them in some neat place and are they worth anything?

My siblings and I had the task of clearing out my parents house and my uncle's house a couple years ago. Tucked away was some currency - these notes, some $2 bills, a silver certificate or two, and a lot of coins. A quick look on e-bay shows they probably aren't worth much, but it's all about condition and rarity.

The notes were in a very old cellophane sleeve. Found the $100 when I removed the $10 to scan.

Sad to go through it, but interesting find. Thanks for sharing it! Since you started it, how about expensive things or money related items?

For instance, I work at a bank now. We get a lot of cash, more than you would think is still floating through the world. Some of comes with little messages...

Most folks don't mind marking up a single.

And I'm really impressed that they go through the effort of buying or having a stamp made.

Some folks just go with the old written form though.

But most won't risk making a $50 unfit and that no one will take. Some will though.

Defacement of Currency

Defacement of currency is a violation of Title 18, Section 333 of the United States Code. Under this provision, currency defacement is generally defined as follows: Whoever mutilates, cuts, disfigures, perforates, unites or cements together, or does any other thing to any bank bill, draft, note, or other evidence of debt issued by any national banking association, Federal Reserve Bank, or Federal Reserve System, with intent to render such item(s) unfit to be reissued, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both.

Wonder how many have actually been convicted for doing this?
