Steeley Dan?

Want to relate a story how I became a fan. Listen or not your decision.

Late 1978, staying at my sisters place on the beach in Ft Lauderdale. We swam, tried to belly board, skated all day. She has friends over.........odd smell in the air but so what, turn on turntable and play Katy Lied............... That album changed my life at 12 years old. We listened to it twice! I studied every note, lyric and beat. That odd smell never left mind you but, I had a great time hangin with 20 somethings acting sooo cool.

Flash forward some 40 years later............ I have bought EVERY album from the Dan and all from Donald Fagen to boot. I am really dumfounded by how time flies but the mind and its influences do not. Passed on what I know to my daughter.
Im 51 now. Reminiscent of the past, wonder why. Have I really passed the hump?

I spent time with every Steely Dan album, going over the lyrics on the liner notes. After Walter Becker died, I read some articles discussing the meanings behind some of the lyrics. One of a kind group as far as I'm concerned. Didn't we have a good discussion after Becker died?

Don't know if you've passed the hump, but you're getting close. I'm on the other side and headed downhill.

Love them now. When I was a teen it was too soft for me. I recently mellowed out in my 50s and have a great playlist.

And Phil Hartman of SNL fame did the Album cover for Aja.
I once met someone from Annandale VA. And they immediately followed it with "Yes, that Annandale from Steely Dan's my old school"

The first thing that pops into my head when I'm reminded of Steely Dan is

Hey Nineteen

Saw them at Red Rocks. Great show, but Red Rocks is merely the best outdoor arena in the USA, if not the world.

Reelin in the Years was probably my first exposure of any account.

Early 70's, downbeat magazine offered a free album with a new subscription. One of the choices, and the only one I was even remotely familiar with, was Pretzel Logic.

I am 58 and grew up with Steely Dan. I own every album they produced including all solo works by both Becker and Fagen.

For most of their popular history they did not tour. It was said Fagen was uncomfortable and would not agree to play live. Once the money dried up from album sales and subsequent digital piracy, they began to tour.

Steely Dan is my favorite band of all time and I had never seen them live. In May my wife and I bought tickets to see Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers and the Sugarland Financial Centre in Houston. To say it was disappointing would be an understatement. Donald Fagen could not hold a note and his band played in a robotic lifeless manner, as if they had no soul. I was dumbfounded and disappointed. We left the show early as did many of the audience. The Doobies were a great band and performed wonderfully.

Did you break their heart and tell them it wasn't that Annandale?

The reference in My Old School is to Annandale-on-Hudson NY. Becker and Fagen went to Bard.

Good to know, shouldn't have trusted someone from Virginia anyway.

The derivation of the band’s name is interesting, I’ve been told.
