Doc Martin steel toe boots. They are pretty comfortable, have a decent heel cup, are full leather, and have a pretty hearty sole. In addition, you can wear them daily. All for half the price of dedicated race boots. Just my 2˘.

Sidi Vertigo's for the ride, and sneakers in the bag if I need something else to wear.

A buddy of mine had a getoff recently, while he was wearing some hiking boots. He now has three screws in his ankle, and a metal plate. He also just graduated to crutches, after three months in a wheelchair.

I already have a plate and screws in the right tib/fib so it's a real boot for me. Sidi Fusion. Nice!

It seems that Sidi's are real popular here. I have a pair of Sidi onroads, which are the most waterproof boots evah. But, here in SoCal it doesn't rain much... I'm gonna try Vertigos next

I commute in Alpine Star Web Gore-tex boots and leave a pair of shoes at the office.
The Web Gore-tex are comfortable enough for light hiking duty and don't look bad off the bike.
