This is the sort of silliness I'd expect in Alabama or Texas. Or Florida even!

But not in peaceful granola munching California.

Large Rafting Event Turns Into River Brawl

Quote:
It began as a peaceful--if boozy--float down a California river for thousands of rafters.

But according to the Sacramento Bee, Saturday's "Rafting Gone Wild" event on the American River "degenerated into a series of brawls this afternoon with dozens of rafters fighting each other with oars and rocks and hurling stones at deputies on the scene."

..."There are so many intoxicated people it's like ridiculous," Marisa Taylor, a floating 20-year-old, told the paper.
Like, totally.

HOLY SHIT!

There was a girl named Marisa in one of my earliest college courses. One day in the class I had with her, we each had to give a little impromptu presentation and about 5 in my friend Clo and I started counting the "likes". Total valley girl.

It's been 14 years and I can still say "like, like, like like" and Clo will burst out laughing.

Thanks, Marisa.

Now I'm not a religious person, but by no means am I anti-religion.

However, when someone's imagined "holy" sightings starts costing the entire community tax dollars, I think it's time to pull the plug.

Quote:
Fervent Catholics in a crime-ridden New Jersey town are flocking to what they say is the miraculous apparition of the Virgin Mary's image in a tree trunk.

On Tuesday, a crowd of several dozen people stood around the tree, praying, taking photos and swapping stories of what they call a miracle....

...The Catholic Church has distanced itself from the supposed miracle and there's no shortage of scoffers in West New York, a tough place with a high Latin American immigrant population....

...Police have erected a metal barricade around the tree and a patrol car is parked alongside to ensure safety for both crowd and tree. Roque has been quoted in the local press as saying that the town spends $1,000 a day to manage the situation.
Really?

Full story

Here's the "holy" image.

It was inevitable I suppose. Narcissism becomes part of the Olympic Games.

Quote:
When you're trying to diagnose an emerging phenomena, one need look no further than Twitter. Now, a day before the 2012 Olympic Games officially open, we may already have the London Games' response to Tebowing: Posed ice bathing.

As first noted by the New York Times, no fewer than seven Olympic athletes took to the Twitterverse to ice bathe luxuriously, seductively or, at the very least, frigidly.

There was U.S. gymnast Alexandra Raisman quite literally cooling her heels with high-profile teammates. There was Jamaican 100-meter contender Yohan Blake offering a steely stare from inside the most un-Jamaican environment possible.
Full story is here.

Am I cute or what?

Paging 70super.

Bill Nye The Science Guy on Evolution

Quote:
"People still move to the United States. And that's largely because of the intellectual capital we have, the general understanding of science," Nye said in the clip. "When you have a portion of the population that doesn't believe in that, it holds everybody back, really.

"Evolution is the fundamental idea in all of life science, in all of biology. It's like, it's very much analogous to trying to do geology without believing in tectonic plates. You're just not going to get the right answer. Your whole world is just going to be a mystery instead of an exciting place," he added.
And furthermore....

Quote:
"And I say to the grownups, if you want to deny evolution and live in your world, in your world that's completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the universe, that's fine, but don't make your kids do it because we need them. We need scientifically literate voters and taxpayers for the future. We need people that can - we need engineers that can build stuff, solve problems.

"It's just really a hard thing, it's really a hard thing. You know, in another couple of centuries that world view, I'm sure, will be, it just won't exist. There's no evidence for it."
Hey, it's not politics, it's SCIENCE!

Bigfoot is a hoax??? Say it ain't so!

Another entry to compete for the coveted Darwin Award.

Man trying to stage Bigfoot sightings gets hit by car

Quote:
A man dressed in a military-style "ghillie" suit and apparently trying to provoke reports of a Bigfoot sighting in northwest Montana was struck by two cars and killed, authorities said....

..."He was trying to make people think he was Sasquatch so people would call in a Sasquatch sighting," Schneider told the Daily Inter Lake on Monday. "You can't make it up. I haven't seen or heard of anything like this before. Obviously, his suit made it difficult for people to see him."
Even though tragic, I admit I LOL'd at one of the comments after the story.

- "I'd hate to be the one who has to come up with something dignified to say at his funeral."
