Shoei has a nice video showing the technology behind the latching system on their new modular

I recently picked up a Bell Star Matte Black model on motorcyclecloseouts at an insane price, coupled with the photochromatic shield it is by far my new favorite piece of gear! No more shield swaps!
Great helmet, lightweight, but very comfortable, overall im very pleased...

really wanted one. but no dealer nearby has one to try. and it was a bit out of my price range.
Picked up a Scorpion EXO-500 yesterday. nice lid! far superior to my 5yr old $75 Z1R Strike

Are you willing to trust your face to a helmet that hinges in the middle and is manufactured by a company motivated by profit. Is it Snell tested?
My ex-brother-in-law left half his face on an Oregon highway many years ago and he didn't have a choice. You do. "Now the question you have to ask yourself is, "did he shoot six shots or just five". Well do you feel lucky"? How "lucky" do you feel? |

I never ride with it the whole lid up, but if I need more air, I will ride with the visor cracked one or two notches (or even fully off the highway - I wear shades under the tinted visor). I sold like a Shoei commercial but I've not found another modular anywhere near similar quality, except perhaps the Nexx. ..a

I spoke with Shoei rep and they have showed the internal of the modular helmet and it is impressive, but I would not trust it with my face. That said. everyone makes their own choice. Helmet is good for about 5-6 yrs of use. Main reason for that is internals start hardening up and will no longer be protecting you as they once were designed to protect you.

I just love this forum! Doesn't matter the subject.
If modulars were really that much more dangerous, manufacturers wouldn't take the liability.... Happy Saturday!!

They also make open face and shorty helmets. Then you have the whole is Snell really safer than DOT or ECE 22-05 on the street. There have been tests that show that a Snell helment will transmit more Gs to your head than an DOT or ECE 22-05 which is not good. Snell thinks their testing methods are best the DOT thinks that their testing methods are best and the EU thinks that their testing methods are best. Simple truth is that a full face helment Snell, DOT, or ECE 22-05 is probably going to give you the best protection. If I was going to go with a modular I would really want ECE-22-05 Instead of just DOT. I would not be terrified of using an ECE 22-05 modular on the street. My riding style is pretty calm. I am far more of a sport touring style rider than a lot of people on the board. So dropping the scare tactics I would say that a lot has to do with your riding style. I will admit that I find it absolutely bizar that anyone that is worried about safety fails to mention color. On the street I would say that you are going to be safer in a DOT Hi-Viz Helmet than a Snell black helment. At least get a bright color folks. I mean really think about it. We spend money on armor, ballistic nylon, Snell helmets and then get them all in black! People we do not have to wear black too look cool. We ride motorcycles so we are cool by default. My current jacket is silver with Hi-Viz green. It is funny but my wife told me the first time I rode with it that "Man I can see you coming from a mile away in that thing!" My next helment will be Hi-Viz as well. |

Interesting read on the topic of modular safety.
This is primarily targeting the HJC Sy-Max II. Here is follow article discussing the latch system upgrade in the HJC Sy-MaxIII The fact that a company struggled through some latching designs simply leaves me concerned. I agree with Elfguy that the Shoei modular latch seems to be a step above the rest. |

Yes, new Shoei is using ALL METAL parts. I saw it at the dealer show last month. I am still skeptical

we used to have a very reputable honda shop here till it went belly up a few years back.
One of the staff told me that he was instructed to tell customers considering a modular that it was just a 3/4 helmet with trick face shield to make it look like it was full face. As i said ,they were reputable and honest IMO and probably why business failed. Sad but cold hard fact. |

I rode yesterday evening, and stopped by cyclegear to see if they had the neotec in - they did. Molested one for a while, I like it, and it will probably replace my multitec in the future. Not for a while though - at $650 retail! yikes. I like supporting my local CG so I'll watch for sales and give them an opportunity to price match.
Back to venting, though. I had to come home and go back out again, sun was setting so I switched to my Icon Alliance (bright colors and I keep the clear shield on it). With all the vents open, I still needed to crack the visor to get as much as air I was getting with the multitec (visor closed) a couple of minutes earlier. I'd never really compared them that closely, but the difference is quite significant. ..a
