Well dang.
So I had hoped to have the Aprilia running for y'all rally goers, so you could take turns slaying the Dragon for an afternoon or two, but now I've got little choice other than taking things in the opposite direction now that I basically can't get warranty service anywhere close to me.
It seems that Aprilia North America has shat upon dealers and service departments by not paying for loads of warranty work, and now they in turn are closing their doors to Aprilia and leaving customers out in the cold. I'm envoking the lemon law. Fun bike, and I wouldn't mind the annoyances that go along with owning a race machine if I actually had support in the form of service backed by the manufacturer, but that's not happening now, and I'm well within the legal framework for making them pay, so that's what I'm attempting to now do. The attourney I've contacted stated that they have experience in dealing with Aprilia, which is not surprising. Ah well, had some fun times while it lasted.

Well...that sucks!
I really hope they make Aprilia do right by you, and that you find a suitable replacement that exceeds your expectations! |

Mark. You are getting rid of your entire collection? Bored with them or just realigning the stars in search of better karma?

My Yamie dealer I got my R6 from (and the only one I trust in the area anymore) also sells Aprilia, I'll have to stop in and see what has to say. That really sucks, sorry to hear it.

Sorry for the hassles. On the positive side, you got to ride that little monster for a while, and this plan of yours will make for a nice array.

XR650L...check! sounds great so far to me ![]() I have a friend who just picked up a gixxer 750. I think that bike hits the sweet spot. I was somewhat disappointed in the fit and finish of the bike (build quality of his is inferior to my R1), but not enough to avoid owning one. I think, if I had it to do over again, I'd have opted for the GSXR 750 over the R1. |

The SV is going, because, well, it's just time for something different on the track. I've been interested in dual sports for a while now, and looking mostly at the DRZ400, but I've decided that I'd like the bigger engine and bulletproof platform that is the XR... 'specially if I'm going to do something like a Copper Canyon ride which I hope to do in the next few years.

There was a Honda/Aprilia dealer around here a few years back who did me a favor by telling me NOT to buy an Aprilia from him because he was so pissed off at their lack of support that he was dropping the line. Now that was one honest dealer!

I'm probably going to sue Aprilia, and make them pay me back the purchase price. What they do with the machine is their business then.

that sucks... I know of a local guy who has the 550 and it's the same issue. Awesome machine that spends more time in the shop than out. And he was also OK with that but if they stop honoring warranty work what the hell can you do. A shame really since I think Aprilia has the most sexy innovative bikes out there in the "reasonable" price range. Hopefully this problem doesn't leak to much into their lineup of more street oriented bikes.

Not to stereotype or anything, but what is it about Italian bikes that creates this reputation of less than stellar reliability?

Because they are generally more maintainence intensive and less reliable than their Japanese counterparts (and BMWs which kinda run forever) that also seem to be able to take a lot more abuse in comparison.
