1st Gen R1 fork upgrade

I know its already been done, but I decided to post it up anyway. Maybe just feeding my ego lol

Anyway, here's what I'm starting with. 2003, low mileage, been down, and the RH fork leg is slightly bent... Front end will be sorted, and new paint shortly should have it looking new again.

I found all these parts in Virginia while down here working for $300 so I'm gona dive into it.

I have a choice of 99 or 2002 forks, the triples are 2002.

I believe the outer dimensions of the 99 and 02 are the same and will both slip into the clamps,

the 99's are 41mm internal and the 02 are 43, but the 99's are a few mm's longer, and appear to be in a bit better shape.

The best set up would be the 2002 triple tress and 99 forks, the offset with the 2002 triple trees and the longer 99 forks will be not be far off stock height.

However saying that 99 forks have poor internals compared to the 2002 forks(these being 5pw) and have better internals.

fit the triple trees, and try both sets of legs dont take long to swop over this way you can see the difference the longer and shorter legs will have and make your own mind up.

Dave..

Yea, thats what I've been reading, I'm glad I got both, I'm gona rebuild them both and ride them both. Than I'll decide which legs I'm gona keep.

I may look into extensions too, I like the idea of the 2002 forks better, but dont want to sacrifice much ride height. I've removed the R1 stem on the press at work, I'm gona get the trees of my bike tomorrow and start the stem swap this week.

yeah i fitted 99 r1 forks and like i said the internals are poor compared to later forks i had company rebuild them to ohlins spec with springs and modify the valve and there awsome they just soak up the bumps without any drama's and feel firm at the same time very nice feeling indeed gives plenty of confidence, the chap that did all the work on them for me also set them up ie comp/rebound/pre-load whilst they was off the bike and his settings was about bang on.

I also did another fz1 for a chap using the later 2002 forks and the difference in height was noticeble compared to my mine, also i found it the best mod so far infact its like having a new bike.

Hope all goes well for you.

Dave
