My high mileage Gen 1 does the same thing. If I crank the adjuster so the lever is near the top (furthest away from bar) that makes it easier to find 1st and neutral but harder to pull.

If I leave it close to the bar it's easier to pull on long rides.

If it snapped back to the top would that make me any happier, probably not.

I've got about 110K on this clutch. It doesn't slip in any other way, so I'll just keep going till it does.
